I happen to live in Oregon and have been researching the Mallory Family
through out the US. There were some very interesting Mallorys in the early
history of Oregon..including Rufus Mallory who married Lucy Rose, daughter of
Aaron Rose, founder of Roseburg. Lucy was a visionary and used to give
"readings" out of the back of the Mallory Hotel in Portland. Rufus was a
congressman and gave a speech in defense of Andrew Johnson at his
impeachment. Rufus's brother, Hon Augustus Mallory came to Heppener about
1868...when the famous Heppener flood hit....it took Augustus' home
downstream. It lodged behind some rocks...when they found Augustus, he was
still sitting in his rocking chair in the living room holding a baby, and
very much well and alive. These Mallorys came to America c 1635 and were
among the first settlers of New Haven Ct 1638 where Peter Mallery signed the
Planter's Covenant 5 Aug 1644.
One of the Mallorys, William C...married Marcus Whitman's
grandniece, Sophia Whitman, but I haven't figured out who he is yet. He was
supposedly born in OR in 1855 and lived in Lewiston ID.
I am also familiar with the LaTourettes that came to Oregon about
1850 and owned much of the land between Mollala and Oregon City. They were
descendants of Jean LaTourette and Marie Mercereau who came to America in
1685 from France after the Edit of Nante was lift. Destination was SC but a
storm blew the ship north to Staten Island. Later the family bought a 100
room home from the Dupoints and expanded it to 600. Commodore Vanderbuilt
got his start ferrying customers from NYC to the LaTourette House to
"resort."
         Regards, Mallory Smith
