Hi Mallry (et all)
I really enjoy the lore of Oregon! I've become more interested in Oregon history as I've begun getting into my grandparents ancestry more.
My grandfather, Francis 'Tex' SLOAT was born in Hood River in the early 1900's to Wesley and Isabelle (MITCHELL) SLOAT. They moved to Oregon from Minnesota in 1900. My grandfather grew up there and was, among many things, a Forest Ranger - he built the Ruckle Creek trail - and an Oregon Hwy Patrol Officer. He was one of the first to ride a Harley Davidson up and down the old highway. We have great pictures of him and his Harley. He was also a Hood River Firefighter. In the Hood River parade of 1993, he was invited to ride on the 'Old' fire engine - it was the engine that he used to ride to fires when it was new! That was really neat. He kept a scrapbook of his adventures with the OHP, and the cases that he was on.
My grandmother, Thelma (SUTHERLIN) SLOAT, is of the Sutherlin, Oregon Sutherlins. Her parents were Charles E. and Bessie (VAN ALLEN) SUTHERLIN. She met Tex SLOAT through her older brother Glen. My grandparents had been married 66 years when my grandfather passed on in 1999.
My father's ancestors win, though, in the longevity area. He is descended from the Cowlitz Indian tribe. One of his ancestors married a French Canadian fur trader from Montreal named GARRAND/GUERIN. Then one of her descendents married into another French Candian family by the name of PICHETTE DUPREY.
My mother-in-laws family is said to have come over on the wagon trains. Their name is TURNIDGE.
I suppose that I could have said in few words that the names I'm researching (at the moment!) are SLOAT/SUTHERLIN/GARRAND/PICHETTE/TURNIDGE. I'd love to share information with anyone on these lines.
Regards,
Tracie
