Hi Les --
I must have missed your prior message, but was very interested in this
one. A Charles Abner SWEET (b. 1834 in VT, d. 1900 in Multnomah Co., OR)
was married on 9 Oct 1856 in Owosso, Shiawassee, MI (due west of Flint) to
PERLINA MELVIN b. abt 1838, d. 22 Apr 1861 in Three Rivers, St. Joseph Co.,
MI (borders Branch Co. which is on the west).
He married his 2nd wife, Lodema Howey on 22 Oct 1862 in Union City,
Branch Co., MI.
Note: Anything in square [brackets] means that it was difficult to read and
is only "my best guess."
1860 U.S. CENSUS: Lockport Twp., P. O. Three Rivers, St. Joseph Co., MI,
July 1860, page 464, Dwelling 1447, Family 1463:
Charles Sweet 25 M farmer 300 NY
Perlina 21 F Mich
[Armeda] 4 F Mich
Frank 9/12 M Mich
and
Royallin or Reyalla Twp., Berrien Co., Michigan, Page 24 (or 44?), Dwelling
[X65], Family [79] is another:
Sweet, Charles A. 24 M farmer 400 -00- b. NY
Note: I don't know who this is.
I have no further information on PERLINA MELVIN, but noted that one of
the children of Joel Melvin and Elizabeth Wisner, Joel Henry Melvin, died in
Quincy, Branch Co., MI. So I'm wondering if Perlina is included in your
family of Melvins?
I'm also wondering if you have any other SWEETs who married into your family
lines?
I don't have any proof that Charles A. Sweet is even related to my
line of SWEETs. However, a cousin who had access to a SWEET-LAKIN family
photo album found two photos taken in Three Rivers, St. Joseph Co., MI.
One was of a man; one was of a woman. Then by 1890, Charles A. Sweet and
his 2nd wife, Lodema Howey, and family moved to Oregon. So I am *guessing*
they may be related .. or not. <grin> Isn't this what keeps genealogy so
interesting?!
After Charles died, his 2nd wife filed for his Civil War Pension.
Inclued in the
file was the info. (below) about Perlina and one of their children. ( I
have never been able to find any info. on either [Armeda] or Frank Sweet.)
:
MISCELLANEOUS: From General Affidavit filed June 1901, by Minnie Sweet
Churchill, age 52, a resident of Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, at 1805
Washington St., Boston: "My brother, Charles A. Sweet, was first married to
Pauline Melvin in Owasso, Michigan Oct. 9 1856. Of her death I have not the
exact date, but it was within a year of his enlistment into the Army. I
think her death occured at Three Rivers, Michigan, as they lived there at
one time. At the time of her death, he brought his only child home to my
fathers, and not long after enlisted."
TOMBSTONE: From General Affidavit filed in June 1901 by Wm. E. Barnard, age
42, who is the clerk of the Riverside Cemetery Association in Three Rivers,
St. Joseph Co., Michigan. He states that on May 4, 1861, Lot 20, Block 3,
Allotment C in the Riverside cemetery was purchased by Charles A. Sweet and
Charles Tutten. He further states that no records of burials were kept
prior to 1873, but that he made a visual inspection of the above lot and
that an "old tombstone very much worn but still solid in the ground with cut
lettering thereon bearing the following inscription: "PERLINA SWEET, wife of
Charles A. Sweet, died April 22nd, 1861, age 22 years, 9 months, 13 days"
Note: This information can also be found in St. Joseph Co., Michigan Birth,
Death and Marriage Records, 1790-1900, FHL Film 0,927,440, Item 5
And a question .. how could Milan Morrell Melvin b. June 1830, be a son of
Joel Melvin who died November 1828? Perhaps a typo in one of the dates?
Looking forward to hearing back from you.
