I noticed that you indicated STEPHENS pioneers on your list. I am
researching Lovet and Milbrey STEPHENS, any connection? Julie

> Lucy, the daughter of Roseburg founder, Aron Rose, married Rufus Mallory.
Rufus was one of the first secondary school teachers in Canyonville, Douglas
Co., Oregon then began teaching at Deer Creek (Roseburg). Rufus read law;
became an attorney; was elected to the legislature; moved to Portland where
he was a member of a prominent law firm. I can find much in print about
Rufus, but I'm interested in his wife, Lucy.

died at or shortly after birth probably in Salem, and a son who married and
lived in Portland. Lucy appears to have been a very intersting individual.
Variously listed as a spiritualist and philospher, she referred to herself
as a "publisher" or "editor". She wrote and published a booklet or magazine
called (I believe) "World Advance Thought" for a number of years around the
late 1800's and early 1900's. She seems to have been involved in the "New
Thought" movement that questioned the established church docrines of the
time and gradually evolved into the Unitarian church. She corresponded with
and was quoted by Tolstoy. It is clear that she was engaging in activities
not expected for women of her time.

interviews I've been able to find only basic statistics. I would really
like to find a copy of her "magazine" or other of her writings. If there
are descendents, I am hoping they may know what became of her writing after
her death.
