A bit of Hudson Bay History might be helpful here. The Canadian based Hudson Bay Company was active in the Northwest long before 1828 when John McLaughlin became the chief factor at Fort Vancouver. Their normal route of travel as across southern Canada and either down the Frazier River, or the Columbia from British Columbia. Since the Red River Settlement is in Sascatchewan it is certainly unlikely that the family came to Oregon in 1841 by boat unless you count some canoe travel. Bob Casebeer

That's real early did they come across the mountains or by ship. The few early people that came by land road horses in 41 that awful hard on a woman.
