I would not exactly call those things canoes though some canoes were used on the trip. York boats stood 5 to six feet tall. The canoes traveled faster.

[Check out the picture. The thing in the top background is a HBC canoe.]
In 1826 when Lt Emilius Simpson came out with the Saskatshawan Brigade, it took five months overland/water with the supplies for the Columbia. July into November.

[I am still transcribing but they definitely went through Saskatshawan.]
Our Brigade consists of about sixty persons in all for the several departments vis: Saskatshawan, Columbia and New Caledonia, including Mess. Jn Stewart C. T., Rowen C. T., McMillan C. T., Macgillvery C. T., MacDougal Clerk, Birnie Clerk. Sinclair mate of vessel building in the Columbia, and myself for the purpose of taking command of that vessel. We embarked in five boats which were fully laden with the supplies for the interior, our Crews were in high spirits and commenced their laborious Journey with as much apparent indifference as if a few days was to bring it to a conclusion. [July 14, 1826]
When I said boats I was referring to York boats.

A bit of Hudson Bay History might be helpful here. The Canadian based Hudson Bay Company was active in the Northwest long before 1828 when John McLaughlin became the chief factor at Fort Vancouver. Their normal route of travel as across southern Canada and either down the Frazier River, or the Columbia from British Columbia. Since the Red River Settlement is in Sascatchewan it is certainly unlikely that the family came to Oregon in 1841 by boat unless you count some canoe travel. Bob Casebeer

My ggg-grandparents left the Red River Settlement in Canada and went to Oregon in 1841.
That's real early did they come across the mountains or by ship. The few early people that came by land road horses in 41 that awful hard on a woman.
