I have to agree with Bill, try out some demos, PAF is a freebee and as far
as I can understand is just as good as FTM or any other program. I haven't
had the bad experiences mentioned with gedcoms, but I also haven't input one
directly into my family file since very early on.
PAF is supposedly able to merge intelligently which the version of FTM I use
certainly can't, after I had merged two files with my stuff I had people
duplicated up to 20 times.
If gedcoms aren't being used correctly by a program, it may be because the
gedcom wasn't exported correctly. Ideally a program should pad spaces on
place idents and dates to conform to gedcom standards, but I am not sure how
that all works and how important it is any more.
