Okay;
It was in answer to a similar question (or perhaps it was you Dolores?) that
I had posted stuff before that I mentioned in
my answer last night to Carole.
Thanks again for all your well wishes, am feeling a little better but
probably be a week more yet before I am really up to snuff, but thought I'd
post some of what I had posted before again real quick.
the best site I found has a lot of thumbnaild sketches of just about every
railroad in Oregon, I think it skipped the Longview Portland and Northen,
but does mention the Old Slow and Easy which won[t mean anything to to those
who don[t know how short those short lines were, but neither one adds up to
much. I could probably model the LP & N in N scale without leaving any of it
out in a fairly modest layout.

I don't know who hosts this but it is a site primarily about Puget Sound
Washington history but mentions some of the history of Oregon, I would add
it is entirely possible great Gram Hawley came to Washington by rail and
moved south. I believe that is how my Dad's family got here, though they may
have come to Portland or some such.
http://www.newportnet.com/yprhs/link_page.htm is a list of links to Railroad
museam info for the whole Northwest and some
links to museums south of Ashland
http://www.ptsd.wednet.edu/district/resources/bookmarks/wahistory.html
is a general history page with a lot of links, including some railroad
history, but contains a lot more interesting stuff, I may spend a week
browsing there.
I am going to let it go at that, I don't know that these links will answer
either Carole or Dolores question, but can bet they will point them in the
right direction.
Again thanks for all your kind words folks.

I am wondering if anyone knows when the first train made it way to Oregon
and from what direction. I hope this is not a dumb question, my Great
Grandmother came to Oregon in the late 1880's from Kansas - she ended up in
Oakville, Linn County, Oregon. I always thought she came by train. Anyone
know anything about Alvina Jane Hawley who married John B. Couey in 1892.
I have the marriage certificate but can't find where my grandmother is
buried. She lived at Shelburne and died in 1897.
