[or-roots] Summerville Railroad

 I have a copy of an 1880 map issued by the Oregon Railway and Navigation Co. 
showing both their lines and projected lines.  The map shows no line into 
Summerville but there was a line from Umatilla going down through La Grande and 
Union to Baker City.  My Grandfather, A.H. Gaylord was a telegrapher for the 
railroad and by the mid-1890's was the stationmaster in Union.  His 
father-in-law, Michael Travers, worked as a laborer for the O R & N as early as 1861, 
starting in Celilo.  By 1885 the railroad had 2 transcontinental connections, one 
with the Northern Pacific at Wallula and the other with the Union Pacific at 
Huntington.  This information is in an excellent history of the Union Pacific 
by Jeff Asay,
"Union Racific Northwest".  which I have if anyone wants more information on 
early lines.
