I have a copy of an 1880 map issued by the Oregon Railway and Navigation Co.
showing both their lines and projected lines. The map shows no line into
Summerville but there was a line from Umatilla going down through La Grande and
Union to Baker City. My Grandfather, A.H. Gaylord was a telegrapher for the
railroad and by the mid-1890's was the stationmaster in Union. His
father-in-law, Michael Travers, worked as a laborer for the O R & N as early as 1861,
starting in Celilo. By 1885 the railroad had 2 transcontinental connections, one
with the Northern Pacific at Wallula and the other with the Union Pacific at
Huntington. This information is in an excellent history of the Union Pacific
by Jeff Asay,
"Union Racific Northwest". which I have if anyone wants more information on
early lines.
