[or-roots] Train to Oregon

It may surprise some to know that the ships generally stopped at the Sandwich Islands on the way from the
Isthmus to Oregon.

Oh, that's Hawaii to the younger generation <G>

Quite a detour, suppose it had to do with favorable seas.

I had relatives that traveled from Brooklyn, NY about 1863--apparently by ship, went by some means across
the isthmus and then by ship up to Portland.

Thanks Gene,

But I really don't think they were ever on a boat. Would have heard something about that over the years.
Now I am puzzled. <http://cdn-cf.aol.com/se/smi/0201d20638/03> Maybe I will never know.
