No railroad that I know of would have gone the whole way. You would catch whatever railroad went "west"
from Huntsville, probably to St. Louis, then, maybe the Union Pacific to east of Boise, then, then catch
the train that went close (we're talking to within a very few miles, here) to Summersville. Maybe many
changes. May not have slept on the train, could have gotten off and stayed in a hotel.

Here is a website with the trains in Oregon as they would have been in the late 1800's.
http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/map_item.pl?data=/home/www/data/gmd/gmd429/g4291/g4291p/rr005090.sid&style=r
rmap&itemLink=D?gmd:2:./temp/~ammem_h5F9::&title=Colton's%20township%20map%20of%20Oregon%20%26%20Washingto
n%20Territory,%20issued%20by%20the%20Oregon%20Railway%20and%20Navigation%20Co.

(You'll probably have to copy and past this URL, it is really loonnng <G>.

Or, you can find your way to it from here: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/rrhtml/rrhome.html and
then go to "browse by geographic location" and click your way to Oregon. The map you want is called
"United States -- Oregon. United States Washington, (State) c1880."

You will probably want to use the Mr.Sid viewer, which you can get here: http://www.lizardtech.com/

Pat:

So which railroad might this be, I acknowledge that they may not have gone directly into Summerville. I
just don't know what rail line would have traveled from Huntsville, Arkansas to Imbler, Oregon. I don't
mean to sound stupid about this.

I am sure you are right about the tracks, but they are probably much newer than the stated time frame.

I have searched every book I have, looked at the same maps as the others, and have come to the same
conclusion.

In the late 1880's he could conceivably traveled on the railroad to within a few miles of Summerville.
And, in passing on the information, he would have probably said, "we traveled from Arkansas to Summerville
by rail" -- you have to remember that many of the small farming communities were not served by rail, but
were close enough for a person to travel by train.

Some, like Jacksonville and (I believe) Mt. Angel, chose *not* to have the train come through. Oops <G>!

Leonard thanks for the reply. But the railroad they came on traveled from Arkansas to Oregon. I know
there was some railroad in Summerville cause I have been there and seen the tracks.

The nearest railroad to Summerville Oregon is Imbler Oregon. That train ran from LaGrande Oregon to Joseph
Oregon. I was raised in Wallowa Oregon.
