There was a very nice article in the Bend Bulletin on Sunday (9/5) regarding the work Deschutes County is doing to restore the Paulina Prairie Cemetery near LaPine. A local high school student and Eagle Scout candidate has taken on a lot of the work and involved local businesses and volunteers to help. The unfortunate thing is that there are a number of graves that are no longer identifiable due to theft of markers, or time taking care of wooden memorials. Old photos show that there were more tombstones in the past.
Would anyone on the list have records of folks that may have been buried in this cemetery? I'd be happy to pass the information on to the County Associate Planner who's in charge of the project...it sounds like she's doing this thoughtfully and respectfully. She's trying (by state mandate) to catalog any known historical gravesites in the county - the state considers a historical cemetery any burial that took place before Feb. 14, 1909, the 50th anniversary of Oregon's statehood.
Here are the names mentioned in the article as identified gravesites (there are at least 8 people buried here):
Emma Deedon - died 1915 due to complications of pregnancy
George Guy Rease - "Born April 25, 1879 in Walla Walla, Washington. Died of smallpox on Caldwell Ranch on May 2, 1903", age 24
Addie Laura Caldwell - died 1918 of influenza, age 9
William Henry Caldwell - died 1910, age 69, after being kicked in the abdomen during a cattle drive
Melvin Raper - 1892-1914, "died in a tent of tuberculosis"
Thanks!
