Jonathan Swift

The author of the classic Gulliver's Travels was appointed as a young man as Prebend of the Parish of Kilroot, where he served for a year from 1695 and is said to have written the Tale of a Tub. Swift used the extensive library at Castle Dobbs regularly, possibly because he had few parishioners and the library provided a refuge from what he regarded as an isolated place that was never truly to his taste. However, he is known to have taken part in the annual Mayor's Feast at Carrickfergus. He went on to become Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, where his reputation grew as a pamphleteer, satirist, political diarist and, of course, author.
