Northern Ireland is one of the least wooded areas in Europe. 6% is covered in woodland and only 1% is valuable species-rich native broad-leaved forest.
Within the Carrickfergus Borough Council Area boundary, 963.4 hectares or 12% of the total land area of 8203 hectares is wooded. The 963 hectares of woods in the borough are planted with 706.64 hectares of non-native coniferous species such as Sitka Spruce and Lodgepole pine. This Coniferous woodland is the commonest type in Northern Ireland, unfortunately these areas are of little importance to most native species of the plant and invertebrates. When young these forests can provide breeding habitat for some bird species but as the forest matures this function is lost. Within the borough areas planted in conifer woodland are mainly found around the Woodburn reservoirs and Lough Mourne.
Broad-leaved woodland which is comprised of native species and provides a rich habitat makes up 119.83 hectares or 1.49% of the borough. This figure is greater than the figure of 1% for the whole of Northern Ireland. Native broad-leaved woods are valuable because they support a diverse range of plants and animals and are best adapted to the local climate and soil types. Within the borough, areas of broad-leaved forest are mainly found around Woodburn Glen, Castle Dobbs Estate an don the escarpment near the Belfast Road in Whitehead.
