[or-roots] virus zappers

I know this has been on this discussion group before---but I did not pay attention. 

What are the FREE and GOOD virus protections programs out there?  How long do they take to down load?

My McAfee ran out--and with a roaring speed of 26.4 land line---anything to download takes forever.  We have lots of noise on our phone lines and downloading at times is precarious.....

Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.
