I'd probably go to the county, once you get the exact information. Then,
I'd make sure it was *Mrs*. If it was, there will be some additional
paperwork, stating that both are free to marry, etc. At least, that's
what I found in one case.
I just checked and there is nothing on the Washington or California
records either.

At my library there is a book of Oregon marriages. I found this
marriage in that book. Tonight I will look up the exact date and
county. The reason I am trying to track these folks down is that I am
curious about this Mrs. Lavina Deford. I have a Samuel Deford who came
to Oregon about 1852 and his mother's name was Lavina Deford. I don't
know if this woman is his mother or not. If she is, then it would mean
that she and his father Joseph Deford would have gotten a divorce. I
have been under the impression that she died because he had remarried by
the 1860 census. It seems plausible that she was Samuel's mother since
she married this guy Whitaker in Oregon and that is where Samuel
migrated to from Iowa.
