p. 106 North Bend
Just south of North Bend, a city named Yarrow was platted in 1890. The
tract of some fifty odd acres had been bought from the government in 1863 at
$1.25 per acre. A year later it was sold for $500 to Charles Merchant, who
sold it eleven months later for $400 to Charles E. Eckhoff.

p. 427-428
Perhaps no other individual on the Pacific Coast was better known in the
lumbering industry thn was Captain A. M. Simpson. ...

But Simpson was not dismayed. In the years that followed, with his
ever-growing fleet of vessels, he reached the world markets.

Charles H. Merchant, becoming general superintendent at North Bend in 1860,
continued for 13 years until he went to Marshfield in 1873 to join E. B.
Dean & Company. ....

----
The Pershbaker Mill at Marshfield was inaugurated by John Pershbaker and
associates in 1867.

He immediately began to build ships and opened a store, with his brother
Charles in charge. After five or six years of more or less success, the
property was taken over by E. B. Dean & Company. It was abandoned at
Marshfield in 1885 to be replaced by a new mill at Bay City on the east bank
of Isthmus Inlet, present site of the McKenna mill. Store and offices
remained in Marshfield on the waterfront. Old residents still have a clear
recollection of the store and its manager, Charles H. Merchang.

Under Merchant's management, the new mill prospered until he withdrew in
1891. Five years later, in the beginning of 1896, the company was facing
financial difficulties. One partner had died; hard times of the 1890's were
presenting their problems. Affairs were placed in a receivership with
Charles H. Merchant as receiver for many years.

to send you.

Reminisces of early days by Thomas Hirst ... C. H. Merchant, for many years
a hard worker, but by his business foresight and enterprise, his strict
integrity and economy is now able to sit in the stern and steer while others
paddle his canoe.
