I reflected on Nevada. I think we actually said "Nuh va' duh". It's Neh vah' dah. Ahhhhh. Anyone on here know diacriticals? I have difficulty "saying" these in writing. <G>
And, for those watching the Supremes -- it's Soto (as in so-so) my yore. You kind of have to crimp your upper cheek muscles to get the soto.
Thank goodness El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles del Rio de Porciuncula shortened its name to Los Angeles and now to LA. Easier to say.

Ah, come on, Les -- Del Norte? When I went to school at Colorado State (I won't say when), my Dad and grandmother drove me from Flagstaff. I commented to my new acquaintances that I'd had really good French fries in Del Nor tay. They laughed. Then, I commented on Pwe[b/v] lo, only to hear back, "you mean "pee eh blo?" I gave up soon after that. Apparently things haven’t changed much in 40+ years.
And, we used to say Casa Grand (ca as in cat, sa as in "yes, suh" and Nah va da (again, va as in cat). Living in Tucson, rather than Flagstaff has improved my tongue.
I loved your story.

Don't feel bad about mispronouncing something, I was in the eighth grade before I realize the Vilahmut river was one I was crossing that said Will uh metty on the signs. I was a real prodigy!! Ever been down the Swee slaw river or seen the light house at Heck etta head? And I live on the Um puke uh river. All those were from one newcomer radio station announcer in the '50's. He probably increased the station listnership 20 or 30 percent for at least a year just from folks tuning in to see what he'd butcher next. Boy did I get flak for pronouncing the second "e" in Del Norte
last summer!
