[or-roots] Was Greenberry, now Ima Hogg

My curiosity about Ima Hogg was piqued! I remember hearing her name when I
was young. My internet search turned up this article, from the web site
about "Bayou Bend," her home and gardens, which are now a tourist attraction
in Houston, Texas:

"'Our cup of joy is now overflowing! We have a daughter of as fine
proportions and of as angelic mien as ever gracious nature favor a man with,
and her name is Ima!'

"These proud words were written by James (Jim) Hogg upon the birth of his
only daughter in Mineola, Texas, in 1882. The child's name--which may seem
an unfortunate choice--was borrowed from an epic poem written by Jim Hogg's
brother, Thomas. The heroine of the poem was called Ima, short for Imogene.
Miss Hogg was later to recount: 'My grandfather Stinson lived 15 miles from
Mineola and news traveled slowly. When he learned of his granddaughter's
name he came trotting to town as fast as he could to protest but it was too
late. The christening had taken place, and Ima I was to remain.'

"Bayou Bend, the magnificent home of Miss Ima Hogg, is the extraordinary
legacy of a remarkable woman. Best known for her superb collection of
American decorative arts, she was also largely responsible for Bayou Bend's
innovative architecture and breathtaking gardens."

The site has a lot more about her, a virtual tour of her beautiful home,
history about the area, video - one of those places where you could waste
some time easily.

There is a famous Ima Hogg who was or still is a very rich woman in Dallas
Texas. I saw a TV program about her some time ago.

Fascinating! My mother (1907-1989) also used to speak about knowing twins
named Ima and Ura Hogg; I always wondered if that was a joke.

Greenberry Pumphrey is an interesting name - probably Welsh as the name
would come from Humphrey; " ap Humphrey" would be the son of Humphrey.

My wife's family has Greenberrys in it - Greenberry Pumphrey and various
iterations among descendants, but they were in Maryland, not Oregon.

But some make you wonder. My mother used to talk about some girls she knew
- I believe in the Eugene area - named Ima and Ura Hogg.
