Cilla,
Just in case, I again checked for the obit for John P Stanfield.  The Weston newspaper starts July 2 1897, the  issues for the Athena paper from 9 June 1893 through December 1894 are all missing.  They were lost before the paper was filmed.  The lady who ended up owning the originals verfied that everything she had was filmed for the Pendleton library.    She is deceased and I do not know what became of her collection.   I reread the Pendleton paper for about 10 days and there was no mention of Mr. Stanfield.  Those would be the papers where you might expect to find obit if there were one.  
Sorry, but looks like this is dead end.

  New to list.  Looking for John P. Stanfield orbit.  Born Dec 26, 1824 in East Tennessee, died Oct 14, 1894.  Buried in Weston Cemetery, Weston, Umatilla Co, OR.  Also wife, Elizabeth Ann (Edwards) Stanfield, daughter of James and ____ Edwards.  Born March 24, 1837; died Feb 8, 1896.  Buried in Weston, Umatilla Co., OR.  Married in Forest Grove, Washington Co, OR.  The paper at that time was "Weston Leader."  John P. possibly born in Greene County or Blount County, Tennessee.  Any help appreciated.
