On the maps found on vol 1, Polk was about the same longitudinally, but ran
to the Pacific until 1853 when Tillamook was formed. So, yes, on the north
side.
Sorry you didn't find a closer "hit" but as you note, these people all seem
to be related one way or another.
Not clear on why Gideon Cox "made his mark" on one of the affs. He signed
his own application, apparently. Maybe if I have time I'll look up the
original.
Gideon "says" he arrived in 1846 ((or is assumed to have?). I haven't
checked the rosters for that year.
This is great fun. 'Course when I get it done, I'll have to branch out
north, east, south and west. Dang. The whole county before I get done.
Or, maybe someone else could do the other twps?
Pat

So I think to mysel; "I guess I'll let others worry about humoring Pat, I
don't have anyone in my family file from that area!"
Then I thought better of it and decided to see what I found; Cline, nope,
don't have that name, though I do have a Kline, but they all are buried in
Michigan, so far so good, (or should that be "so bad?")
Cox; uh-oh well, no Isabell died in 1671 . . wait what is this Isham b.
1813, d. bef 1880, better check him out clicked on next name down instead b
12 april 1852. Sarah Bell ma to one of Phoebe cuz'z kin. So now I have an
Oregon connection to the surname but in Curry county and then I notice Sarah
is born in Polk Co. I don't remember how much ground that county covered in
1852, but seems to me like it was mostly up north, what about Daddy; huh
born Knox Co., Kentucky. Okay so I guess I will see where Pat's Mr. Cox is
from; yep, you guessed it, Knox Co., Kentucky.
Now granted that doesn't prove Kinship, but does make one suspicious.
Unfortunately all I know about Isham and family is what is in the Censuses I
find them in. Now I don't see Isham in vol I of DLC book, but Gideon is a
busy witness for Aff along with Samuel and John Cox for William Shaw, but
then that seem fair William witnessed for Gideon along with Sam and John.
Gideon also witnesses for Peter Cox, as do Sam and Elias Cox. For Samuel
Allen though Gideon is the only Cox, along with Thomas B. Allen. This time
there is a notation indicating that Gideon "made his mark;" did someone
else sign his name on the other affadavits? Even more interesting; on Samuel
Cox's homestead app Gideon is witness and so is Joseph Blackerby; is that
just being a good neighbor, or is there a connection there? Again on Samuel
Tucker's app Gideon and Sam and a couple non Cox names.
Ahah! in volume two Isham has more entries than Gideon had in volume one;
Through the first four patents, including his own, Isham doesn't have any
other Cox names. The first two also involve Thomas R. Blain and the next two
involve Thomas R. Blair. I bet they are the same person.
Here is one of those "three degrees of seperation" things; the sixth app
that Isham is indexed for also is witnessed by James N. Dickey as well as
Isham, and the app immediately before it is for Thomas J. Dickey. Dickey
just happens to be the maiden name of Sarah Bell Cox's mother-in-law.
Finally on the eighth entry we find Isham and another Cox; Jacob; Jacob
arrived in Oregon 1 Oct 1852, while Isham arr 1845. Isham and Jacob witness
for John Syron next. Last for Isham on one page he is witness twice; both
times with Mr. Blain/r and once also with both Dickey's I mentioned earlier.
In final analysis I have no proof of connection between these folks; Isham
and Jacob while obviously neighbors, arrived in Oregon at different time
from each other and not at the same time as any of the Cox's asscociated
with Gideon. Gee, here's a thought, why Don't I go see what Stephanie has on
these folks?
She does provide a possible link to William Shaw; George Washington SHAW
(1827-1890): m'd 1851 Jane COX; s/o William and Sarah (Gilliam) Shaw.
I see no sign of Gideon and company in the collection of Coxes on the 1845
page.
