I recently had occasion to try to find an acronym and ran into the following web site. Very interesting, especially if you look for IOOF. 8^)

I was thinking along these lines as well, and I've seen quite a few of these with only the military information, no B-D dates at all.

I think they are generally placed by some organization, which may be where the OOF comes in.

The question would be, who is buried near this stone???

  Pat

  In Tucson

Recently my son and I located a Civil War headstone on private property in Baker Co. for a great grand uncle. It too had no date, just rank and company. I sent a photo of it to David Samuelson and he located from NARA (I think) a card showing the same information plus a date. Why it was not on the stone is a mystery. The govt. supplied CW headstones from about 1864 to 1903 and this one was on the pinkish side. My grandson, who had recently finished a five year enlistment with the OR Ntl Guard recognized it as a military headstone as soon as he saw the photo we took. If you have Ancestry you can see a copy of the card by searching for James FitzJames Cooper (J.F.J. COOPER on the headstone). His is the last card shown.

  Carroll Cooper Summers

     I made an error.

Its been so long since I saw the headstone picture I thought it was I.O.F.

    Wrong - my applogies.

    Its

    O.O.F.

All it says on the stone is his name, O.O.F. and 44 wis.inf.

thats where I had the memory that I thought was 1844.

SO now that I found this, the only thing I dont know is why no death date?

Why no records of the burial if there is a stone and how do I find out any thing more?

The picture is 18kb if any one wants a copy.
