Since apparently the Independent Order of Foresters, a fraternal benefit
society, originated in Newark, NJ in 1874, and appears to have been
active in Oregon in the early 1900's -- similar to the Modern Woodmen of
America -- there was also a Catholic Order of Foresters -- it seems it
had/has some popularity, as these groups continue to have a following.
Perhaps you can find a local chapter (maybe the yellow pages?) that
could be of assistance.
INDEPENDENT ORDER OF FORESTERS, PO BOX 41598. EUGENE, OR 97404-0383
I don't see any initial info for your "Wiss Inf 1844", and wonder if
that could be Wis for Wisconsin or Miss for Ole Miss -- I don't know
where your fellow is from ...
I still like the mental image of an intoxicated dyslexic stone carver ...
