A note about Heritage Quest. --
I was a subscriber for many years to Heritage Quest; have many of their census CDs. However, since they changed to library subscriptions only, Heritage Quest is no longer available to me. I know that for anyone living near, and having a library card at the larger libraries, it works out quite well. For those of us in more rural areas with small libraries not able to afford Heritage Quest subscription, it is a different story. And, if I chose to have a non-resident card at the Eugene Public Library, that would make Heritage Quest my most expensive subscription. Too bad. I really liked HQ.

Follow the link http://www.cityofsalem.net/Departments/Library/online-resources/Pages/Family-History.aspx

Or if the link is broken visit the Salem Public Library page – Online Resources – Family History and you will see a Heritage Quest link – enter your library card # and you have access from home

Denise, how does one access Heritage Quest?  I have a Chemeketa Regional Library card through the Stayton Library; also belong to the Willamette Valley Genealogical Society and Linn Gen. Society.  I browsed through GenealogyBank today--you can look around, but not get much info, without paying.  I checked out several states for their available newspapers.  At the moment not much I could use, but others might find many of their areas of interest are included.  thanks for your suggestions!

I would second Linda’s comments.  I have the US subscription to Ancestry.com and a subscription to GenealogyBank.com (both are extremely useful).  I also subscribed to WorldVitalRecords.com not long ago because they said they had newspapers.  I do not find it useful as of yet.  I don’t subscribe to Fold3 but it is good for military records.  And Heritage Quest is excellent for it’s PERSI

Another site I find useful for Oregon is http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/ - you can narrow the searches to Oregon – it covers only up to 1922 but includes some smaller newspapers and it is free.

Another site that is free and helpful for locating articles is http://libweb.uoregon.edu/dc/newspaper/index.php?newspaper=oregonian   where the years 1852-1987 are partially indexed.  Sometimes that helps give a little more detail about the articles and leaves out advertisements – helpful with more common names

There is also a California site (if your relatives wandered south a bit) at http://cdnc.ucr.edu/newsucr/cgi-bin/newsucr?a=q

Just a few sites that came to mind with this discussion.
