This is one of the more interesting censuses, particularly from the
viewpoint of "color."
Starting with household 114/117, Garrador, the "Indian" percentage of the
members is indicated -- 5/8, 1/2, 3/4, etc.
The birthplaces are equally interesting. Joseph Garrador, 84, 1/4 Indian,
was born in Missouri, parents born in Canada. His wife, Elizabeth, 75, 100%
Indian, was born in Washington Territory. Others were born in Michigan, WT,
and Oregon.
This includes Parsis Gingris, b in WT, fb Canada, mb WT
Ceciel, 3/4 Indian, b WT, fb MIch, mb WT.
Wm Acosto, 16, is 3/4 Indian, b Oregon, fb Mexico, mb WT. The other children
as well.
The states represented her mostly are WT, MIch, Oregon, and Canada. Is this
all one family?
In the 1870, Frank and Cecillia are next to Hacia Goba. Frank is white,
Cecillia "was" Indian, but corrected to white because the husband was white.
In the Hacia/Hagia Goba/Gaba household, there is a William, age 4, He and
parents were born in Oregon. All are Indian.
Did the enumerator interview the neighbors in 1870 (these would probably be
cousins, of some kind) and mis-heard "Mary" for "William?"
Did the enumerator in 1880 hear "William" for "Mary?" Hmmm.
Well, in 1900, there is a Gurmollermo (Guillermo) Acosta, in Madera County,
CA, but born in Mexico. He's a quartz miner. There's a William in Texas,
but born in Texas of Texian parents. Neither of these is married.
It is interesting that in 1860, there are 27 "Indian" folks in Douglas
County, none of whom are those listed around the Acostas in the later
censuses. Which makes me wonder. I recall that there is a reservation in or
near Douglas County. Could some of these have been missed on the census for
that reason?
OHHHHH, wait, I found them!!!!
They are living in Wolf Creek, Josephine County.
William Accuster, b May 1864, OR Mex OR, day labour, cannot read nor write
wife Lucinda, b Feb 1876, married 8 years, two children, two living, OR OR
OR.
Children are
Pearline, 6, b Jun 1893, OR OR OR
and Thomas, 4, b Mar 1896.
With them is Frank Accuster, 30, b Jan 1870, OR Mex OR, day labour, can read
and write
Next to them is Frank Survant, b Apr 1851, m 18, OR French Canada, WA
Adalina, wife, June 1865, OR Mex OR
Source Citation: Year: 1900; Census Place: Wolf Creek, Josephine, Oregon;
Roll: 1347; Page: 5A; Enumeration District: 0018; FHL microfilm: 1241347.
Presumably Adalina is the Adalina of the 1870 census.
So, that looks pretty good. Now, as to where William was?? Who knows. If we
knew Lucinda's parents, perhaps we'd find out he was farmed out to them in
1870, and has their name. BTW, I only found them in the 1900 by putting in
just "oregon" and father born in Mexico. Whew!
Merry Christmas!

Riddle me this one;
1870 Census Douglas County, Canyonville page 2, dwelling 14;
Acosta Frank 37 Mexico
Cecilla 25 Washington T
Mary 6 Oregon
Adaline 4 "
Francois 1 "
Eliza 2/12 "
1880 Census Doug Co, Canyonville, page 13; [still next door to Alex Dumont
so probably same house]
Gingras Parcis 50 W T
Ceciel 34 WT wife
four
Gingras children
Acosto Wm 16 Oregon
Adalaid 14 "
Frank 11 "
Eliza 9 "
Catherine 7 "
So where the heck is WM in 1870? I have to assume he is somewhere as my sex
change comment was purely sarcasm, but I have been unable to find him. In
fact if I didn't have his marriage documents for marrying Cinda Rondeau in
1892 and what I presume is his divorce from her in the Plaindealer in 1902
and a death index entry I assume is him I would say the 1880 census us
wrong.
Name: Wm. Acusta
Event Type: Death
Event Date: 24 Aug 1911
Event Place: Douglas, Oregon
Unfortunately the Plaindealer online only goes to 1905. My main question is
whether William who marries Cinda in Douglas Co on 31 July 1892 is the above
listed Wm age 16 and whether he is indeed Frank's son. If I could find them
in 1900 I would probably have at least half my answer and would be happy to
assume the rest and leave proving it to someone it was important to.
But no matter how I tease my query I cannot find him in 1900 or 1910, even
though I am sure he is in Douglas county the whole time.
Ah well it is getting to be late thirty, time for bed.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everybody.
