[or-roots] Oregon marriage index

Dear OR-rooters,

I just wanted to let you all know that the State Archives received a large quantity of records this past summer from the Vital Records office. They include the 1903-1915 birth records, 1911-1945 marriage returns, 1925-1945 divorce returns, and Delayed Birth filings 1903-1918. Below is a link to a form on our website that can be used to request copies of these records.

https://sos.oregon.gov/archives/Pages/records/request-record.aspx

As you can tell from the messages from Les and Pat, not all of these records have online indexes.

The records are currently being scanned as part of a cooperative effort between Ancestry, Family Search, the Oregon State Archives and the Oregon Center for Health Statistics (aka Vital Records). Eventually the images and indexes will be available on both the Ancestry and Family Search sites but that is a process that doesn’t happen fast so feel free to contact the Archives staff using the form above to access the hard copy of these records. Our charges are $5.00 for each document if you have the complete date, and location. (There may be an additional out of state resident charge of $5 if you are living outside of Oregon) Our charges are considerably less that VitalCheck and our turn-around time is much quicker as well.

Save your money for your Holiday shopping and avoid the middleman. If you need a certified copy for legal purposes you will still need to go through the Vital Records office.

Happy Holidays to you all!

Regards,
Layne Sawyer

At Ancestry, just found the other marriage index (1906-2009), not the index I was looking at yesterday.

Found Avalonne E Butler to Harley A Olson, 7 Aug 1928, Douglas County as you did. Then, I found:

Name:

Avalonne Butler Olson

Gender:

Female

Marriage Date:

5 Jun 1931

Marriage Place:

Douglas, Oregon, USA

Spouse:

John Howard Wells <https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?viewrecord=1&r=an&db=ormarr&indiv=try&h=4231578>

This may be what you had found? Anyway, at Ancestry there’s a stamp for “Order Original Document” from VitalChek,
https://www.vitalchek.com/ancestry/order_main.aspx

I did order a bc many years ago from them, and it was fine, but have you called/written to Douglas County?

Checked Ancestry, no joy there! Maybe they went to Vegas or somewhere?

If someone on the list has ready access to the Oregon marriage index I would appreciate their checking this;

Name John Howard Wells

Marriage Date 5 Jun 1931

County Douglas

Spouse's Name Avalonne Butler Olson

Collection Oregon, Marriage Indexes, 1906-2009

I checked the Douglas county marriage archive on Family search page by page from early May to late August and this record is not in it and there is no entry for either John Wells or Avalonne Olson in the index.

Avalonne's first marriage to Harley Olson is in the records, but neither license or return seems to be in Douglas county and a search of other stuff on family search comes up empty.

I got the above information from Archives.com, but usually they provide a printout of the index page while for this one all I get is the text.

I realized while writing this I hadn't checked state archves, but there I find nothing relevant, though I did find an entry for an Oscar Melvin Olson that got me thinking cousin Oscar had been married three times until I realized the surname was Olson, not Melvin.

Les Chapman

No Ian, I am not really trying to get the whole world in my family file!
