Jeff

The list is quiet -- thanks for waking it up.

You probably have this, but:

(Alert! I found almost every "Murray" born in MA before 1870 to have parents
born in Ireland. AND, many were "McMurray" -- so another name to research)

Lillian and Charlie MURRY, in the 1900 census of Albany, Lane County,
Oregon, give MA for father's birthplace, MN for mother. Ida B would have
likely given the information. Ida B is listed as either "M" or "Wd" -
unfortunately.

Just for kicks, there were a few candidates to be "Dad" in 1900. Using
"Murr?y", b 1860-70, MA, living in California, Oregon, Washington. (that is,
Oregon and surrounding states), I found seventeen men. Subtracting
(temporarily) the four with spouses, the results were interesting. Looking
at Charlie's birth being in Fruitvale, just south of Oakland, by Alameda,
and looking at those in the San Francisco area, we have about six, plus one
in Portland.

You apparently have Ancestry.com (which is where I'm looking right now), so
you can check some of the 1900 census entries there, but here are
possibilities. Indexed as:

James Murray

San Francisco, San Francisco, California

May 1863

Massachusetts

Boarder

xxx

Jas ?? Murray

San Francisco, San Francisco, California

Nov 1856

Massachusetts

Patient, Northern Pacific Hospital

married, machinist

Ernst R Czarske, in Eugene, Lane County, Oregon, probably gave the info in
1910, which makes me think that he was kept in the dark about the kids'
father, thus the "unknown" origin of father for the kids.

I didn't find birth information for Lillian, born in Washington, but that's
not surprising. Also didn't find her under "Ida" which may be her second
name? She's "Lillian I" in the 1900 census. She may have done a "delayed
birth certificate" sometime along the way and it's not showing up.

In 1920, Charles, now 25, is living with his mother in Eugene. Father born
MA, mother born MN.

In 1930, Charles, divorced (from whom?) is in the penitentiary in Salem. His
normal occupation was "clerk." Parents born MN MN.

Charles Murray, in the WW I draft Registration was born 26 Jan 1894, in
Fruitvale, California, and was living in San Francisco, 5 Jun 1917. He is a
student.

Charles A (initial only) Murray, in the WWII draft has birthdate as 26 Jan
1894, born in Fruitvale, California.

Here's something interesting:

Hi,

Is this email list still functioning? I don't seem to be getting emails
from it, and I used to get quite a lot. If it is, I need some help figuring
out the identity of one of my great-great-grandfathers. Here is what I
know:

His children were Charles August Murray, b. 26 Jan 1896 and Lilian Murray b.
around 1898. Charles was born in Oakland, CA. It appears Lilian was born
in WA.

I believe the mother of those children was Ida B. Kroschel, b. about 1869 in
Milford Township, MN.

I think Ida and the father separated before 1900 because Ida is shown as
head of household with two kids living in Linn County, OR in the census.

According to Charles August Murray's prison questionnaire, Lilian was living
in Los Angeles in March 1928. (His mom is listed as Ida Czarske because she
remarried.)

The 1910 census shows unknown for the birthplace of the father of Charles
and Lilian. But the 1920 census shows MA for birthplace of his father and
MN for mother. I looked at all CA,OR, WA 1900 census records for Murray
with birthplace of MA and did not find anything.

1930 census for Charles shows dad from Minnesota so who knows.

My parents both did the autosomal DNA test with Ancestry.com, but I don't
know how to use it to solve this puzzle.

I've had this brick wall for years now. Any leads or tips will be most
appreciated. If you don't have any tips, I would appreciate at least one
response just to know this list is still live.

Thanks!

Jeff Miller
