November is National Diabetes Month
5 Small Steps to Prevent Diabetes

In recognition of National Diabetes Month,the LDA is delivering the message that diabetes prevention is proven, possible and powerful.

More than 41 million Americans may develop diabetes- and most don't even know it. They have a condition called pre-diabetes, which means their blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not yet diabetic.

 The key to diabetes prevention is taking small steps toward living a healthier life. Here are five small steps you can take today to live a healthier life and prevent or delay diabetes:

1. Find out if you are at risk: Talk to your health care provider.

 2. Set realistic goals: Start by making small changes.

3. Make better food choices: Try to eat more fruits and vegetables, beans, and grains. Reduce the amount of fat in your diet.

4. Record your progress: Keeping a food diary is one of the most effective ways to lose weight and keep it off. Review this diary with your health care provider.

LDA Director Appointed to Advisory Board of the California Legislative Black Causus Foundation

Recently, our every own Yolie Acosta, LDA Director, was appointed to the Advisory Board of the California Legislative Black Caucus Foundation (CLBCF) .

The CLBCF is a non-partisan, nonprofit, public policy, research and educational institute. The CLBCF serves as a catalyst for educating future leaders and promoting collaboration amongst legislators, business leaders and organized labor to effect positive and sustainable change throughout California.

"This is a great honor to represent the communities that the LDA serves" says Yolie Acosta.

 Salad of Cactus - Ensalad de  Nopales   Ingredients  [http://origin.ih.constantcontact.com/fs047/1101982265695/img/23.jpg?a=1102207652372]

 -6 cactus (14 calories for 1 cup) - salt for flavor
- ½ onion
- 3 chopped tomatoes
- ¼ cup of coriander
- ¼ grape oil cup
- ½ teaspoon of oregano

How to prepare:
1.  Cut the Cactus
2.  You sew them in water with salt and onion
3.  When read strain and put the remainder (tomato, coriander etc) in the cactus and mix the ingredients

Generous grants from Kaiser (Bell Flower & West Los Angeles), NACDS, Rite Aid, PhRMA, Aetna and Hispanic in Philanthropy
Foundations helps to providing diabetes classes in Latino communities. These classes provide residents with an opportunity to learn about diabetes and to empower them to make a positive healthy change in their community. The picture above is of our Boyle Heights class funded by NACDS Foundation.
