Help Stop Diabetes -
Participate in the American Diabetes Association Alert Day March 23rd
Diabetes has become the greatest public health crisis of the next
quarter century. One in five Americans are at risk for developing type 2
diabetes or already have the disease but don't know it. If current
trends continue, one out of every three children born today will face a
future with diabetes.
To address this growing health crisis, the American Diabetes
Association is asking for your help to promote awareness of risk factors
and symptoms of diabetes. On March 23rd, the annual American Diabetes
Association Alert DaySM , the Association will ask the American public,
"What Will You Do to Stop DiabetesSM? Know Your Risk".
The goal of Diabetes Alert Day is to reach out to the undiagnosed
population with life-saving information about type 2 diabetes risk and
prevention. The American Diabetes Association hopes you will encourage
people in your community to take the Diabetes Risk Test using a brochure
or by visiting www.stopdiabetes.com . They can also call the Association
at 1-800-DIABETES. If someone is found to be at high risk, they are
urged to follow-up with a health care provider.
Activities you can do in your community to create awareness about
diabetes risk factors include:
*Place a Stop Diabetes/Risk Test Display in a high traffic area with a
focus on risk
factors and symptoms of diabetes. Include healthy lifestyle tips to
help prevent diabetes.
*Conduct a community screening using the risk test. Event information
can be posted
on the Associations event calendar to help promote the activity.
*Promote Diabetes Alert Day through the media. Sample newsletter
articles and
radio public service announcements are available for your use.
Promote the Alert along
with services you provide through your diabetes education program,
health department or
other community resources.
*Promote access to the risk test via www.stopdiabetes.com through
e-mail
announcements to your fellow employees or other companies in your
community.
Web banner ads, twitter and facebook messages are also available.
*Distribute information about risk factors, healthy living tips and
upcoming
events within your community.
Attached you will find an order form to request support materials to
assist with your Diabetes Alert Day activities. Should you have any
questions, please feel free to contact Bev Bromfield, Program Manager at
(888) 342-2383 ext. 7294 or by e-mail bbromfield at diabetes.org .
