Public Health Data Analyst/Epidemiologist

Continuous – Next Consideration: 5/15/15


This position serves as primary technical resource for planning, developing, collecting, managing, and analyzing population health data to inform and improve Health Services programs and policies. Collaborates with internal and community partners to educate and facilitate the use of performance data to improve the public’s health. Supports epidemiologic investigations used in the prevention and control of communicable diseases and foodborne outbreaks. Works in an innovative, high paced environment, researching and presenting data, integrating health equity approaches across BCHS and within the community, and participating in development of a regional health assessment.

This position is regular part-time (20 hours/week); will work limited duration, full-time (40 hours/week) for the first 10 months.

MFA: Health Data Collection, Analysis and Dissemination
Essential Duties:
•Plan, develop, collect, manage, and analyze population health data, statistical reports, and surveys.
•Propose, design, and support epidemiologic studies and data collection and analysis for program planning, grant support,  and evaluation of community and/or population-specific needs and health outcomes.
•Design and utilize surveillance systems and data that include groups subject to health disparities or other potentially underrepresented groups.
•Utilize epidemiology and statistics software programs in support of health assessment, monitoring and program evaluation activities. Develop and implement data collection and analysis activities, utilize and/or design appropriate data collection tools and other surveys instruments.
•Conduct literature reviews for program planning, for preparation of publications, and for planning and evaluation. Recommend and advise program staff, management and administration on evidence-based interventions in response to epidemiologic findings.
•Prepare and deliver written and oral reports and presentations on results of data analyses and other information to professional audiences, community partners, policy makers and the general public.
•Apply health literacy and health equity practices when collecting, reporting or presenting data to programs, the community and policy makers.
MFA: Health Data/Epidemiologic Consultation
Essential Duties:
•Provide and review technical assistance to communities and outside partners with respect to surveillance and other epidemiologic data and evaluation.
•Collaborate with managers and community partners and recommend process and outcome measures that align with organizational goals.  Assist management by monitoring, tracking and advising on program and population data; participate on committees to gather information or plan studies to evaluate performance data; make recommendations based on results of study.
•Work as liaison to outside data-generating entities to develop and maintain partnerships for sharing and using data.
•Use skills that foster collaborations, strong partnerships, and team-building to accomplish epidemiology program objectives.
•Develop professional relationships with state, local, tribal and academic epidemiologists and with population-health database experts in order to support and improve coordinated surveillance, monitoring and presentation of epidemiologic data and evaluation.
•Provide Health Services-wide technical assistance and consultation to administration, management, and staff in the areas of epidemiology and performance management.
•Provide Health Services-wide support and advisement for surveys and research including design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data.
MFA: Communicable Disease Investigation and Emergency Response
Essential Duties:
•Provide data gathering and analysis expertise for disease investigations, including foodborne illness outbreaks in support of CD nurses, EH specialists, County Health Officer, County public information officer, and department administration.
•Serve as department liaison with state communicable disease epidemiologists for data system support, data management and exchange, and outbreak analysis.
•Assist department administration, management, and programs to provide epidemiological data and interpretation for media projects and/or during outbreaks and public health emergencies.
•At the request of department administration, work with other agencies and organizations to support communicable disease investigation and emergency reponse.
•Support public health emergency preparedness planning activities including statistical and evaluation support for preparedness activities.
MFA: Special Projects
Essential Duties:
•Oversee, mentor and guide work of graduate and undergraduate student interns and/or program volunteers to support program activities.
•Provide training and technical assistance to internal and community work groups and organizations.
•Participate as an active member of inter-disciplinary teams, and other health services,community, county and state committees/work-groups.


Four year degree in Public Health, Sociology, Community Health or Epidemiology and at least 4 years of relevant work experience and must have experience using statistical software for qualitative analysis.


Must have strong technical skills in data interpretation and analysis, as well as the ability to communicate the meaning of data to non-technical audiences. Master's Degree preferred.
