More on ORTAC: Established in 1971 under the Oregon Recreation Trails System Act, ORTAC is a seven member council that advises the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and other stakeholders and land managers on issues related to non-motorized trails. Specific activities include:
* Quarterly public meetings across the state which serve to bring land managing agencies, partners, and other interested parties together to provide updates on current activities, share expertise, and provide a venue for networking.
* In partnership with OPRD, ORTAC oversees the Scenic and Regional Designation program, recognizing trails that offer unique and spectacular scenic views, linkage to natural and historical resources, and community connections.
* Advising OPRD on the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) and Statewide Trails Plan.
* Issuing the annual Doug Newman Award, which recognizes individuals and groups whose inspiration, hard work, and social responsibility have significantly benefited non-motorized trails in Oregon.
