[OYAN] Friday, May 23rd Shoutout

Hello everyone,

Whew, we made it to another Friday. This week has continued to be full of challenges and also VERY GOOD news:  Both Grant County<https://bluemountaineagle.com/2025/05/23/grant-county-budget-committee-oks-88-7-million-budget/?utm_rs=AP_XCO9tXfoSdi9TRDTK4MJOw> and Salem Public<https://www.salemreporter.com/2025/05/21/how-a-group-of-library-lovers-convinced-a-reluctant-salem-to-raise-property-taxes/>, facing catastrophic budget losses, can celebrate better budget situations and staying open without losing more staff. I know budget and funding challenges are unfortunately not unique in our state, and I have personally felt this spring how very difficult it is to keep doing the good work while facing potential job losses and severe cuts that annihilate services. I am so impressed by all of you continuing to serve your communities with grace, energy, and care while facing very stark budget realities. We know not every library facing financial uncertainty got good news this week. We are thinking of all of you over here.

I do want to highlight a few things from the coast (and coast-adjacent) this week, as I was recently able to take 6-month-old puppy Happy there for her first time at the beach!

  *   Scappoose is partnering with so many great community partners to host an outdoor fun festival<https://columbiacountyspotlight.com/2025/05/16/get-outside-with-the-scappoose-outdoor-fun-festival/> - what a fun way to offer families a great space to hang out and build community.
  *   Tillamook is having a baby dance party<https://www.facebook.com/TillamookCountyLibrary/posts/pfbid02MCxC8mcLs6Z1zMP1WGbwtVduq8qKZKB2hAM7Mq1yYfBxpzLUxmMwHFo9cByDL6Tzl> in Garibaldi. (If you ever need a playlist, Ericka Brunson-Rochette throws a great baby dance party!)
  *   Tillamook also has a pretty awesome display<https://www.tillamookcountypioneer.net/check-out-award-winning-incredible-coastal-futures-project-on-display-at-rockaway-beach-library/> from U of O students, Coastal Futures, up at Rockaway - what a great way to celebrate students, research, local resources, and community futures!

In the midst of hard times, it feels so lucky to be in Oregon, with so much beauty around us - below is Happy becoming obsessed with shorebirds at Tierra del Mar, just above Pacific City. I hope you all have time to take a breather this upcoming long weekend. Thanks again for all you do.
