SMOKE MANAGEMENT FORECAST AND INSTRUCTIONS

1.  DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR NORTHEAST FORECAST AREA ZONES 630-638



    FRIDAY


A weather disturbance is forecast to rotate through a broad upper-level trough over Washington and Oregon.  Skies will be mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms, mainly over the eastern zones.  Maximum temperatures will be 5-10 degrees below normal east and 10-15 degrees below normal west.  Smoke dispersal conditions should be good, but expect brisk onshore surface and transport winds during the afternoon and evening.

    OUTLOOK (SATURDAY-MONDAY)

A few showers could persist over the northern and eastern mountains, through Saturday morning, with clearing skies, from west to east, during the day.  Even with some sunshine, especially west, temperatures will be well below normal.  A drier and progressively warmer northwesterly flow aloft is forecast for Sunday and Monday, as the upper-level trough progresses east of the region. Smoke dispersion should remain good.  Under mostly sunny skies, temperatures will recover to near normal with transport winds slackening and becoming progressively more northerly.


2.  DISPERSION



FRIDAY



Zone 630 and 632:

Mixing height below 1500 ft early rising to 4000 - 5000 ft by late morning.  Afternoon mixing height rises above 5000 ft then lowers to 2500 - 3500 ft during the evening.



Transport wind WNW to NNW at 5 - 9 mph during the morning.  Transport wind increases to WNW to NNW at 10 - 20 mph during the afternoon and evening.



Surface wind WNW to NNW at 4 - 8 mph during the morning.  Surface wind increases to WNW to NNW at 9 - 15 mph during the afternoon then decreases to NW to N at 6 - 10 mph during the evening.



Zone 633 - 638:

Mixing height below 1500 ft early rising to 2500 - 3500 ft by late morning.  Afternoon mixing height rises above 5000 ft then lowers to 2000 - 3000 ft during the evening.



Transport wind WNW to NNW at 5 - 9 mph during the morning.  Transport wind increases to WNW to NW at 10 - 16 mph during the afternoon and evening.



Surface wind WNW to NNW at 4 - 8 mph during the morning.  Surface wind increases to WNW to NW at 9 - 15 mph during the afternoon then decreases to WNW to NNW at 5 - 9 mph during the evening.

SATURDAY

Mixing height below 1000 ft early rising to 3500 to 4500 ft by late morning rising above 5000 ft during the afternoon.  Transport wind light and variable during the morning becoming NW to N at 6 - 12 mph during the afternoon.  Surface wind light and variable during the morning becoming NW to N at 6 - 12 mph during the afternoon.



SUNDAY

Mixing height below 1000 ft early rising to 4000 to 5000 ft by late morning rising above 5000 ft during the afternoon.  Transport wind light and variable during the morning becoming NW to N at 6 - 10 mph during the afternoon.  Surface wind light and variable during the morning becoming NW to N at 4 - 8 mph during the afternoon.



MONDAY

Mixing height below 1000 ft early rising to 3500 to 4500 ft by late morning rising above 5000 ft during the afternoon.  Transport wind NNW to NNE at 4 - 8 mph.  Surface wind light and variable during the morning becoming NNW to NNE at 4 - 8 mph during the afternoon.



3.  BURNING INSTRUCTIONS FOR NORTHEAST OREGON ZONES 630-638

    The following considerations should be adhered to in addition to

    the requirements of the Oregon Smoke Management Plan. These

    Instructions are valid for burning conducted on Friday, July 2, 2010.

Zone 630 and 632:

Avoid ignitions within 10 miles to the WNW through N of SSRAs.  For units that will smolder significantly through the night avoid burning within at least 15 miles to the WNW through NNE in or near drainages leading to SSRAs.  Verify transport winds away from SSRAs if burning in any other direction.



Zone 633 - 638:

Avoid ignitions within 12 miles to the W through NNW of SSRAs.  For units that will smolder significantly through the night avoid burning within at least 20 miles to the W through N in or near drainages leading to SSRAs.  Verify transport winds away from SSRAs if burning in any other direction.

    The smoke management forecaster is available at (503)-

    945-7401. Please call this number and not individual's

    numbers to discuss daily burning.  For large burns (over

    2000 tons) or burns extending over a considerable period,

    please request a special forecast.  Avoid calling before

    8 a.m. and between 2 to 3 p.m.
