SMOKE MANAGEMENT FORECAST AND INSTRUCTIONS

1.  DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR SOUTH CENTRAL OREGON ZONES 624 AND 625

Upper level ridge has built over the state today but is getting flattened somewhat by an approaching storm system.  The warm front will ride over the top of the ridge this afternoon and evening providing some increasing clouds over the region tonight.  The cold front will then ride through Friday afternoon and evening bringing increasing moisture later in the day and evening.  Air mass is quite stable under the ridge and will remain so until the cold front can bring cooler air aloft tomorrow afternoon.  Smoke dispersion will be poor overnight then improves through the day as SW'erly flow increases on Friday.

    OUTLOOK (SATURDAY - MONDAY):

Upper level ridge will rebuild over the state Saturday following Friday's front.  Air mass stabilizes again.  Ridge will continue over the region into Sunday before another front moves in during the afternoon and evening.  Expect another round of moisture later Sunday turning to showers on Monday.  Cooler air aloft will destabilize the air mass again on Monday.  Expect poor to fair smoke dispersion Saturday and most of Sunday then improving dispersion Sunday evening through Monday.

2.  DISPERSION

FRIDAY
Mixing height below 1000 ft early rising to 2300 - 3300 ft by late morning.  Afternoon mixing height rising to 3500 - 4500 ft and remaining the same through the evening.

Transport wind SW to WSW at 10 - 20 mph during the morning.  Transport wind increases to WSW to WNW at 15 - 25 mph during the afternoon and evening.

Surface wind SW to W at 8 - 12 mph during the morning.  Surface wind increases to WSW to WNW at 10 - 20 mph during the afternoon then decreases to WSW to WNW at 8 - 14 mph during the evening.

OUTLOOK:

SATURDAY
Mixing height 2800 - 3800 ft during the morning rising to 3500 - 4500 ft during the afternoon.  Transport wind NW to N at 6 - 10 mph.  Surface wind NW to N at 4 - 8 mph during the morning becoming NNW to NNE at 8 - 12 mph during the afternoon.

SUNDAY
Mixing height below 1000 ft early rising to 1000 - 2000 ft by late morning rising to 3000 - 4000 ft during the afternoon.  Transport wind S to SW at 9 - 15 mph.  Surface wind light and variable during the morning becoming S to SW at 4 - 8 mph during the afternoon.

MONDAY
Mixing height 3000 - 4000 ft during the morning rising to 4500 - 5000 ft during the afternoon.  Transport wind WNW to NW at 15 - 25 mph.  Surface wind W to NW at 12 - 22 mph.

3.  BURNING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ZONES 624 AND 625 INCLUDING THE WALKER
    RANGE PORTION OF ZONE 624
This instruction is valid for burning conducted on Friday, October 23, 2009.

Avoid ignitions within 10 miles to the SW through WNW of SSRAs.  For units that will smolder significantly through the night avoid burning within at least 10 miles to the SW through NNW in or near drainages leading to SSRAs.  No additional restrictions necessary.
