SMOKE MANAGEMENT FORECAST AND INSTRUCTIONS

SALEM FORESTRY WEATHER CENTER

OREGON DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY

ISSUED: Monday, December 6, 2010 7:50 AM Jim Little

1. DISCUSSION AND FORECAST FOR SOUTH CENTRAL OREGON ZONES 624 AND 625

Upper air charts show a strong low pressure area about 900 miles west of Oregon. This is producing a generally southwesterly flow aloft over the region. This morning, however, a strong upper level disturbance is moving southwest to northeast in the broad scale flow producing shifting winds aloft and was producing some precipitation. Most of the precip has moved to the north of the region and skies will be partly sunny this afternoon. Mixing heights will generally be in the 2500 to 3500 foot range for marginal to fair smoke dispersal conditions. Transport winds will be mostly southwesterly.

2. DISPERSION

MONDAY

Mixing height above 5000 ft during the morning. Mixing height lowers to 1800 - 2800 ft during the afternoon then rises to 2600 - 3600 ft during the evening.

Transport wind SSW to SW at 18 - 30 mph.

Surface wind S to SW at 8 - 14 mph.
