Children learn from watching adults in their lives earn, shop, save, and borrow. As the top influence on their children's financial lives, these adults don't need to be money experts to help children develop good money habits and skills.

The Money As You Grow website contains a wealth of age-appropriate activities and conversation starters. The site is divided into three categories: Developing executive function (ages 3-5); building money habits and values (ages 6-12); and practicing money skills and decision-making (ages 13-21).

Kristin Linscott, Library Development Coordinator at the Plano Public Library (PPL) in Plano, TX, discussed how her library applied to the American Library Association (ALA) for the Thinking Money exhibit sponsored by the FINRA-Investor Education Foundation<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkPTIwMTgwODIyLjkzOTM2MTgxJm1lc3NhZ2VpZD1NREItUFJELUJVTC0yMDE4MDgyMi45MzkzNjE4MSZkYXRhYmFzZWlkPTEwMDEmc2VyaWFsPTE3NTQwNzY1JmVtYWlsaWQ9YXJsZW5lLndlaWJsZUBzdGF0ZS5vci51cyZ1c2VyaWQ9YXJsZW5lLndlaWJsZUBzdGF0ZS5vci51cyZmbD0mZXh0cmE9TXVsdGl2YXJpYXRlSWQ9JiYm&&&104&&&https://www.finrafoundation.org/>. The exhibit addresses five major themes: distinguishing between wants and needs, the concept of paying and earning interest, protecting oneself from financial fraud, saving for a rainy--or a sunny--day, and imagining the future self. Kristen said, "PPL is offering programs to support these major themes for kids, families, teens and adults." Among the programs offered are:

  * Art Shop - Families are offered $5 in play money that they use to budget and plan the supplies needed to create a piece of art.
  * Be a Financial Super Star - This is a program for teens learning how to become financially independent. Teen programs are led by local college students through partnerships with University of Texas at Dallas and University of North Texas.

You can learn about other programs offered through PPL's Thinking Money program flyer<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkPTIwMTgwODIyLjkzOTM2MTgxJm1lc3NhZ2VpZD1NREItUFJELUJVTC0yMDE4MDgyMi45MzkzNjE4MSZkYXRhYmFzZWlkPTEwMDEmc2VyaWFsPTE3NTQwNzY1JmVtYWlsaWQ9YXJsZW5lLndlaWJsZUBzdGF0ZS5vci51cyZ1c2VyaWQ9YXJsZW5lLndlaWJsZUBzdGF0ZS5vci51cyZmbD0mZXh0cmE9TXVsdGl2YXJpYXRlSWQ9JiYm&&&106&&&https://www.plano.gov/DocumentCenter/View/30434/Thinking-Money---Programs---Plano-Public-Library> including many free and unbiased financial education resources such as the Bureau's Money As You Grow parent guides<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkPTIwMTgwODIyLjkzOTM2MTgxJm1lc3NhZ2VpZD1NREItUFJELUJVTC0yMDE4MDgyMi45MzkzNjE4MSZkYXRhYmFzZWlkPTEwMDEmc2VyaWFsPTE3NTQwNzY1JmVtYWlsaWQ9YXJsZW5lLndlaWJsZUBzdGF0ZS5vci51cyZ1c2VyaWQ9YXJsZW5lLndlaWJsZUBzdGF0ZS5vci51cyZmbD0mZXh0cmE9TXVsdGl2YXJpYXRlSWQ9JiYm&&&107&&&https://www.consumerfinance.gov/consumer-tools/money-as-you-grow/book-club/discussion-guides/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=OFE_Libraries> and Your Money Your Goals booklets<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkPTIwMTgwODIyLjkzOTM2MTgxJm1lc3NhZ2VpZD1NREItUFJELUJVTC0yMDE4MDgyMi45MzkzNjE4MSZkYXRhYmFzZWlkPTEwMDEmc2VyaWFsPTE3NTQwNzY1JmVtYWlsaWQ9YXJsZW5lLndlaWJsZUBzdGF0ZS5vci51cyZ1c2VyaWQ9YXJsZW5lLndlaWJsZUBzdGF0ZS5vci51cyZmbD0mZXh0cmE9TXVsdGl2YXJpYXRlSWQ9JiYm&&&108&&&https://www.consumerfinance.gov/practitioner-resources/your-money-your-goals/booklets-talk-about-money/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=OFE_Libraries>.

When asked why PPL offers these programs, Kristin stated, "Offering these programs secures our position in the community as an information resource and connector. The library remains vital to lifelong learning that matters and to enhancing the quality of life for people of all ages. These programs highlight the diversity of offerings at the library."

Kristin feels that the Plano community benefits from this programing, saying "Even in a city of relative prosperity and advanced education, there is a need for financial education. In prosperous environments, needs are hidden, but still there - debt, spending not saving, the need to plan for college payments or retirement. Not all members of the community have sufficient income to cover their spending." Kristin also noted that there are many excellent resources available, but they can help people only if people know where they are and actually use them.

The program is designed for use in a classroom setting. Recognizing the central role played by parents and caregivers, a supplement was created for the Money Smart for Young People called "Money Smart for Parents and Caregivers of Children". The parent and caregiver booklets provide tips and resources that can reinforce lessons learned in the classroom or that can be used on their own.
