Subject: Free Fall Trainings from Washington State Library

Register now for these upcoming WSL workshops. All workshops are free and open to library staff.

Making Our Gadgets Work For Us: Accessibility features of our tablets and e-readers
9/16/14 10:00am-2:30pm Washington Talking Book and Braille Library, Seattle
9/18/14 10:00am-2:30pm Spokane County Library, Argonne Branch, Spokane
Libraries are now outfitted with many gadgets to stay ahead of our patron's questions and needs. However, the library staff is not always equipped with the skills to address the requests of all patrons, especially those who need to adjust their device for ease of access. The needs of patrons can range from changing the contrast on a device to starting text-to-speech.
This training will use the devices from Washington State Library's Gadget Menagerie to show the accessibility features that are available out of the box.
The focus will be on accessing e-book and audio book readers that are available from your public library and how to access the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped's Braille and Audio Reading Downloads (BARD) app, which is available for Apple devices from the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library for eligible patrons. Devices include: Kindle, Kindle Fire HD, Nook HD+, Nook Simple Touch, Galaxy Note Tablet, iPad and the Surface RT.
Presented by Eura Szuwalski. Working lunch provided.

Leading Without Authority
9/19/14 9:00am-3:30pm Bellingham Public Library
10/6/14 9:00am-3:30pm Mid-Columbia Library System, Kennewick Branch
10/13/14 9:00am-3:30pm Fort Vancouver Regional Library Headquarters, Vancouver
11/5/14 9:00am-3:30pm King County Library System Service Center, Issaquah
11/10/13 9:00am-3:30pm Spokane County, Moran Prairie Branch, Spokane

Years ago, if you were in a position of authority, you could just announce what needed to be done and assume it would be carried out. But times have changed. Now, as organizations have expanded and have become increasingly more complex, no matter what the formal hierarchies are, people must work with each other across reporting lines. It doesn't work to say, "Do it because I told you so." Leading from any position requires higher evolutionary leadership and influencing skills. In this training, participants will learn leadership concepts and frameworks, including emotional intelligence; effective communication, leading teams, and motivating others. Participants will have the opportunity to practice skills and develop action/ development learning plans. Presented by Cyndi Schaeffer, King County Government Employee Training. Working lunch provided.

Social Software in Libraries
9/26/14 9:30am-3:30pm Spokane Public Library, Downtown Branch, Spokane
9/29/14 10:00am-3:00pm North Central Regional Library Distribution Center, Wenatchee
10/14/14 9:30am-3:30pm Camas Public Library, Camas
10/20/14 9:30am-3:30pm Washington State Library, Tumwater
11/20/13 9:30am-3:30pm Bellingham Technical College, Bellingham

Similar to the original "Social Software in Libraries" workshop, this session will focus on more web-based services that libraries should be aware of - Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Pinterest, and YouTube. We'll take time to work (or play) inside each service and discuss possible uses within your libraries.
Learning Objectives:

* To examine and evaluate Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Pinterest, and YouTube

*         To consider library implementations

* To demonstrate the use of each service

Presented by Christine Peterson, Amigos Library Services. Working lunch provided.

9/11/14 9:00am-2:00pm Ritzville Public Library, Ritzville

Do you have staff who could benefit from a one day refresher course on copy cataloguing?
To help the Lincoln County libraries as those libraries transfer from paper catalogs to Koha catalogs, WSL is bringing Spokane Falls CC Library Instructor Paula Swann to conduct a one day workshop on copy cataloging at Ritzville Public Library on September 11th from 9 a.m. to 2.
