[Libs-Or] Orbis Cascade Alliance communication with EBSCO and Ex Libris about data sharing

Thank you Diedre and Max for your replies. I am going to step out of this as well, and just say that I am sorry if you felt attacked by my comment. I, myself, felt a little attacked by the white supremacist and racist hash tags. I think we should all be able to respect each other’s ideas without using inflammatory descriptors that just make people angry.

Here’s to future positive conversation.

Thank you Diedre, for acknowledging that I am not a troll.

You can bump me off you list if you desire, but that will just prove my point even more.

You can have one less person of color to deal with in your daily routine...

Why does it matter that the company is in Israel?

Are Israelis above diversity?

Libraryland does not have many people of color, and what I mean by it being white-supremacist is that libraries and librarians rarely, if ever tackle subjects that are relevant to people of color--subjects that are fundamental to our field--like Information Literacy, for example. This is but one glaring example where librarians fall short intellectually.

I'll use a thought experiment here to try to illustrate what I mean.

Suppose Germany had won WW2.

Now suppose that some Jewish people survived and they were able to become academics in this new world.

This new world will have information and what they call 'knowledge' that has been created by the newly installed culture.

How can the Jewish person now relate to this information?

Is the information valid without being questioned?

Does this information and knowledge have in impact on how the culture runs?

Is this information and knowledge the basis for education in this culture?

Is the information 'true?'

Would the Jewish people who pointed out that the information and knowledge they have is skewed by a White-supremacist lens be considered trolls and other derogatory terms?

Indigenous people and other people of color live in a world similar to the pretend world I described above. What is really sad is that almost the entirety of the library world either doesn't notice this, or doesn't care to talk about it.

I'm not surprised by the attack/s against me--I'm used to it--I operate in culture that is fundamentally white-supremacist, repentantly genocidal and that built it's wealth on the backs of slaves.

My main point was, "Gee the board of Ex Libris seems to be homogeneous and that I don't think it is a good idea to do business with organizations who's leadership is homogeneous."

I am leaving this conversation because I don't think it is worth the effort. It would be my hope though, that librarians would want to discuss these issues instead of attacking me.

No, but I was trying to stop the discussion.

Max gets carried away from time to time and this posting was one of those. Haven't we all gone a bit too far from time to time, though maybe not quite so publicly. Racism is a real issue and one that Max faces daily. I don't so it is hard for me to judge how frustrated I would get. We do not have a lot of diversity in the library world, though it might be marginally better than 20 years ago.

I know those of you at Multnomah think about this and have consciously looked at how to make changes.

I look at it here in Lincoln County and I know we want to do more but haven't succeeded as much as we would like.

I was just as uncomfortable as everyone else was with the comments made but decided to look beyond those particular words to where that kind of intense frustration comes from. Again, I'm a middle aged white woman who has not had the same experiences so I have to step back a bit and look at the big picture.

Yes, I my first message was just written in hopes to move us off of this uncomfortable message and discussion but now I am thinking that the bigger discussion might be good and help us understand what causes such an angry and frustrated response.

Max is a good person and not a troll. I usually enjoy his postings on Facebook. I think that in this case he may not have done the research he should have done before posting.

I did notice only one woman as part of the Ex Libris management team, which never thrills me but is not unusual. I think it doesn't hurt to look at the diversity of the groups with which we work. Maybe this message can just serve as a general reminder that taking a look at the diversity of a company is a good thing to do.

Who IS This Max person? Does anyone know him or her? What institution does he/she work for? My thought is we have a troll in our midst. My suggestion would be to remove this person from the list. If their institution would like them on it again, they can let us know and we can let them know why they were removed. Max's argument, as we can all see, is ludicrous (really, libraries are all run by white supremacists??) and it doesn't even hold together. Let's not waste any more time on trolls.

The company headquarters is in Jerusalem

Perhaps it would be more useful to direct your concerns about diversity to Orbis Cascade, rather than generalizing an Israeli run company and an entire industry as white supremacists.

You are, after all, a part of that industry as well……

Did you not see the page?

I didn't see any Asian, Latinos, or Blacks in their leadership.

Please correct me if I am mistaken.

Homogeneous systems are defunct.

I'm saying that for a company who does business in the US, this organization's leadership seems AWFULLY homogeneous.

Incidentally, from my perspective, those hash tags can cover the entire library industry.

Thanks!

Hello Max,

Could you please be more specific with your claim? Seems like a serious accusation given the hash tags (?) you have included here.

Maybe, I missed part of the conversation?

Thanks for any clarification you might provide,

Northwest colleagues,

You may be aware that the Alliance has been encouraging EBSCO and Ex Libris to reach a data sharing agreement that allows EBSCO content to be fully represented in Primo. Although this particular conversation involves these two vendors, it is part of a broader principal. We continue to hold that libraries must be able to make independent decisions about content and discovery. All of the content our members purchase must be fully available via our chosen discovery system.

As you will recall, in April EBSCO announced a new metadata sharing policy. Since that time we have been analyzing this proposal and have engaged with both vendors. Now the Alliance Board has formally responded. In brief the Board's letter to EBSCO and Ex Libris says that we celebrate this step in the right direction but that it is not enough. The letter asks for a quick implementation timeline and a roadmap for more.
See the latest letter and entire dialog at https://www.orbiscascade.org/ebsco-ex-libris/ [1]

Best wishes.
