WORD - Shift Paragraphs to the Right Easily
Intermediate

Nothing looks more boring than having all the text in a document left justified. It's harder to read and looks dense.

One quick way to dress-up a Word document is to shift text to the right .. giving white space and diversity. Let's look at a "plain Jane" approach where everything is left justified and even.

[shift paragraph]

You can see we've used "fake text" for this example because it is so quick. (See article <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001uO4dbLiH_9Jd6XocT7hLywAnykOMrH4eb5JkcJww39AlppO3tMo7ACT1EDO6ueRC2eshEYt-zK_lXW8eBTjluZ7TmHES_WP6oTAWmbz3P1r40vfPNzPxgGOP2AiFWKN3bB0rxfny55HHe_L1UPMXPPHsCaxBcm0uMIU3AeoeMSs=&c=DdH1QRTlUdbG3fdQ6OpxeBRpfyH5wH8fxe5XA1rKvgeQP9SNIA1AUw==&ch=9phQSNQqz3BZrcO7QU13fRDM__t5adv7FZ9eQ2xFculLkNRNtU8rGQ==> on the formula you can use to do the same.)

Now let's look at how much easier and pleasant it looks to shift paragraphs to the right. It's instantly more readable.

[shift paragraph]

How to Shift Paragraphs

Here's how you move a body of text to the right in one keystroke.

· Put your cursor anywhere in the text you want to move.
· Hold the Control key down.
· Press "M" (for "move").

The text will shift over to the right by five spaces.

Want it over more? Do it again... and again.

The nice thing is that all the paragraphs you do this with will line up precisely with each other.

Oops, went too far? Want to move the text back to the left?

· Put your cursor in the text.
· Hold the Shift key AND the Control key down.
· Press "M."

Now you can quickly indent for a snazzy look with one trick.

Communications: Writing
When to use "like" vs. "such as"

Language changes. Words and phrases that were once slang, become everyday use. Let's look at when to use the word "like" versus "such as".

If you were listening to someone talk, which of these do you prefer?
"I enjoy doing fun things like swimming, tennis and reading,"
or
"I enjoy doing fun things such as swimming, tennis and reading."

Personally, when talking, I tend to use the top one, throwing in the word "like" before listing the series of items.

However, when it comes to writing, I revert to my early schooling which would say that a list of things requires the use of "such as".

Here's why...

EXAMPLES

· She is like the sunshine. That book is like a breath of fresh air. (comparison)

· You can use YouTube for many things such as research, entertainment and skill building. (list)

So should we stick to the idea that "such as" precedes a list ... when writing? Or do we gravitate to the more common usage of "like"?
