WINDOWS - Get Rid of (Or Personalize) the Weather/News App
Intermediate
In a recent Windows 10 update, a new option has appeared in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. You may have noticed a weather notification... the temperature and forecast for your area. (See arrow)
[weather app in taskbar]
It provides a quick temperature visual, but when clicked, it opens up a whole new screen with a bird's eye view of top news stories, traffic, sports, etc.
While this could be helpful to some computer users, others may find it distracting -- especially when they unintentionally mouse over it and the pop-up screen opens.
[weather and news app]
Let's look at both how to hide this new taskbar option or keep it and add some customizations.
Hide the News and Interests App in Windows 10
[turn it off]
If you want to hide this feature, here are the quick steps:
· In a blank space on your taskbar, right-click and choose News and Interest.
· Mouse over the options in the sub-menu and select Turn off. That's it!
· If you'd like to bring it back, again, right-click in a blank space in the taskbar, go to News and Interest and choose to Show Icon and Text (or Show Icon only).
Customize the News and Interest App in Your Taskbar
If you want a quick way to stay up-to-date with current events or weather, you can customize which info blocks are included – weather, finance, sports and traffic -- and personalize them. Have a favorite sports team? Make sure you get the updated game results!
NOTE: You are personalizing this for your Microsoft account. You must be signed in to save the settings. To see if you are connected, open the News and Interest app and click the three dots in the upper right corner. It will show the connected account, or a link to sign in.
To hide a block or personalize what is displayed for you, click on the weather icon in the taskbar to open the interest pane. Here you have several choices.
[hide or change settings]
For the Weather, Sports, Money and Traffic blocks, click the three dots in the upper corner.
· Select to hide or edit the settings.
· Each block has different options. For example, for both Weather and Traffic, it detects your computer's location, but you can change the default to another region or city.
Under the Top Stories block, it will start to learn the type of news you like. Just mouse over an article and click the three dots to tell it to show More/Fewer stories like this.
To see more stories in the preview window, click the refresh (circular arrow) button at the top of the window.
[story options]
To manage the type of content displayed in the News, Money and Sports blocks, open the News and Interests app and click on the Manage Interests option at the top of the window. This will open the Microsoft (MSN) personalized interest options.
On this page, you can select the type of info in different ways.
1. Use the search bar to look up specific stories… like Summer Olympics or NBA finals.
2. Or scroll through the list by type of news, and in each section, there are choices. Click the plus (+) sign next to a topic to add it to your feed. For example, you could choose under News: US or Technology; Under Entertainment: Movies; or under Money: Retirement.
Over time the app will show you stories based on your selected interests!

Communication: Timely Acknowledgment
Recognition at the moment
When we conduct a Communications Assessment within an organization, receiving timely acknowledgement is often cited as an area to improve.
I can identify with that because I remember working tirelessly myself to create a ground-breaking, week-long seminar for financial executives within Xerox. The team and I were so pleased when the five days went by smoothly and the senior leaders seemed to have thoroughly appreciated the symposium.
At the end of the last day, when everyone had left but our team, it was a huge letdown when our manager just walked out of the room without ever saying "nice job" or "it went well."
Sure, two months later she took us all out for a fancy lunch to say thank you. We all knew it had been a success at the time. But the joy of it had been deflated. A lunch sixty days after the fact was appreciated, but it didn't take the sting out of not receiving positive words at the time of the event.
All it takes is a bit of praise and some acknowledgement of the effort to make people feel good and know their efforts are valued.
No matter what position you hold within an organization, you can communicate with timely recognition and appreciation.

Leadership
Your reputation is built on action, not talk.
Henry Ford is known to all of us as a titan in the world of manufacturing automobiles. He's often credited with creating the assembly line instead of having a team of people building a complete car; then starting another.
I ran across this quote of his which seems to be simple, yet profound.
Every time you plan to do something, have great dreams, or talk about your future, remember his words...
"You can't build a reputation on what you are going to do."
Think about it!
Be careful about always talking about what you're going to do. Do it! Then share your accomplishments. Don't keep your light hidden under a bushel.
