I would like to find out if our group educate their VR staff about alternative research tools that do not require a library card (i.e. Jurn, DOAJ, iSeek, Infotopia...). I try to fit in these alternatives when I train newer library staff, and to current library staff who inquire about what there is beyond Google, DuckDuckGo, Yippy, and similar research tools.

Thanks,

Paul

Thanks for setting this up Tamara!

I’m interested in the following topics:

- Is your state VR integrated into library reference services as part of their job duties/responsibilities?

- Training:

o Do you train library staff on VR?

o When providing training

• do you incorporate ‘the reference interview’ as part of your training?

• Do you provide a kind of ‘resources toolkit’ – basic reference resources and evaluation criteria training?

• Do you usually to train online or in person?

• Do you restrict training to full time librarians (with degrees)? Or mix it up? Does it depend upon the library?

• How often do you train/how many hours a month?

o Do you have any sample ‘best practices’ or handouts you’d like to share? (For example, Oregon’s AnswerLand shared Texting Best Practices a few years ago and we’ve used this in Delaware ever since.)

o Do you have any follow up training?

o And here’s the tricky one we can discuss: Do you have any supervisory leverage? For example, if someone answers a question that doesn’t follow best practices and you know the customer is unhappy, do you provide follow up to the library staff? How do you handle this?

I’m glad to show everyone what we have for staff training and resources and would really like to see what others use.
If no one is interested, though, I’m fine with going with another topic.

Thanks so much,
Cathay

Does anyone have any agenda items? I haven’t received anything yet…
