[Erate] Special Reminder About Gifts

Sometimes vendors promote their businesses by offering sweepstakes, raffles, or contests for prizes. I always advise applicants to refrain from entering into any kind of promotion that offers a prize due to the strict e-Rate gifting rules. If you receive a solicitation of this nature, I advise you to exercise extreme caution and remember the following:

1. No single gift can be more than $20 in value

2. No single person can receive gifts totaling more than $50 per year.

3. The above limits include food and beverages.

4. The above limits do not include plaques or awards that have little or no commercial value.

5. If you are thinking of entering a contest or the like, make sure you know who the sponsors are. Sometimes a contest may be operated by one entity, but the prize may be sponsored by another.

6. If you think you may have inadvertently accepted a gift that violates the above, there are remedies, so please contact me and I'll be happy to assist you.

7. When in doubt, DON'T! A gift card isn't worth your school or library losing funds!

If you'd like more info on gifting rules, here is a really helpful breakdown. http://www.e-ratecentral.com/archive/News/News2011/weekly_news_2011_1010.asp
