Fatality Review Team News November 2023
New Healthy Native Babies Project
[A close up of a purple and orange background Description automatically generated]
Dear Colleagues,
As we continue to advance our efforts in preventing infant mortality, including sleep-related deaths, it is with great pleasure to announce the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Division of Reproductive Health has partnered with the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), on the Healthy Native Babies Project.
The Healthy Native Babies Project<https://www.nichd.nih.gov/newsroom/news/111623-HNBP> seeks to reduce the risks of sleep-related death among infants in American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) communities. This effort began in 2002 as part of NIH's Safe to Sleep campaign. In partnership with NICHD, CDC will lead the effort to update and disseminate Healthy Native Babies Project materials. CDC will collaborate with AIAN-focused organizations to ensure the voices of AIAN communities are reflected in the updated materials. For current materials and background on the Healthy Native Babies Project through NICHD's Safe to Sleep(r), please visit https://safetosleep.nichd.nih.gov/training/native-communities.
This month, as we celebrate the rich and diverse Tribal cultures, traditions, and histories of AIAN communities during Native American Heritage Month, we are excited to have this project as a part of our growing portfolio to address the inequities for AIAN communities. Through the Healthy Native Babies Project, with the Hear Her(r) Campaign and Maternal Mortality Review Committees work, we focus on our intention of keeping mothers and babies healthy.
We encourage you to share this announcement with your networks.
Sincerely,
Wanda Barfield, MD, MPH, FAAP
