[FIT] Change Notice for Aerial Imagery Web Services - NAVIGATOR to OREGONEXPLORER - UPDATE

All,

Here is a follow-up explanation of the imagery services turning off without notice yesterday.

We have just made the switch from 10.0 to 10.2 on our production servers. ArcGIS Server 10.1/10.2 is a Java application and we are finding that it uses significantly more system resources, specifically memory, than 10.0 did. We were experiencing memory exhaustion, and arcgis server was stopping frequently. We spent about a week troubleshooting this issue and were able to configure the servers to use RAM more efficiently, and today most of the services are back up. Initially in getting the servers stabilized we had to make a judgment call in turning off some services to allow the system as a whole to keep running. As it turns out, many people have been using imagery services (and others) we had to turn off as we were monitoring the systems.

We apologize for the trouble this caused, and this is not how we would typically do things.

We have planned for some time to have people begin using the imagery.oregonexplorer.info URL for imagery services.

We sent out a message in July notifying people that the 2005 imagery, specifically the old URL for WMS based on the ER Mapper technology was changing.
"Users may point to any of the services listed at http://imagery.oregonexplorer.info/arcgis/rest/services/NAIP_2005 for 2005 imagery, or other vintages here: http://imagery.oregonexplorer.info/arcgis/rest/services ." That was a hint of things to come and we would like to have people begin the transition to new services in your apps, desktop connections, etc.

The imagery services at navigator are back on for the time being, but I will continue to monitor the affects of keeping 90+ services running.

Thanks,

Subject: Change Notice for Aerial Imagery Web Services - NAVIGATOR to OREGONEXPLORER

All,

We have changed our navigator servers during the 10.2 roll-out. We would like people to start pointing to http://imagery.oregonexplorer.info/arcgis/rest/services as the main imagery server and free up resources on navigator.state.or.us.

I have turned off most of the imagery services on navigator .

Thanks,
