TPEP grantees,
Thanks again to those of you who submitted ideas last week of local youth-oriented tobacco use prevention activities, to be used as part of the Surgeon General's report on youth tobacco use being released early tomorrow morning. Three such activities happening in Oregon are among those highlighted in the attached Word document, and they may well be called out by the Surgeon General herself during her presentation.
As you'll see from the Tobacco Control Network message below, media materials, including a customizable news release, will be sent to TPEP tonight, and I will forward those to you all once I receive them. Please remember that this information cannot be released until 7 a.m. tomorrow morning (Pacific Time, Thursday, March 8).
Tomorrow's release will be the Office of the Surgeon General's 31st report on tobacco use and its devastating effects. It will be the first SG update on youth tobacco use since 1994. This report should generate a lot of media attention for Oregon and other states doing great work in responding to the epidemic of youth use of tobacco.
OHA will issue its own news release, in response to the SG report, to point out some of Oregon's statewide youth tobacco use statistics and prevention efforts.
If you have any questions, please let me know. And if you have a chance, tune in to the SG's announcement (link below).
Jonathan

Subject: TCN FYI: Timeline and tips for the Surgeon General's Report release
Dear Tobacco Control Network members:
In case you missed today's briefing call from CDC, here is a summary of what to expect this week as the Surgeon General's Report is released:
Timeline:
* Evening of 3/7/12: EMBARGOED information will be released by CDC to state tobacco control programs and partners; please DO NOT share this information with the media. Materials are embargoed until 10am ET on 3/8/12. Materials will include:
o National press release
o Fact sheet
o Executive summary of the report
o Swiss cheese press release that can be customized by states/communities
* 3/8/12:
o At or before 10am ET: Information about digital and social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, web buttons, badges) will be distributed
o 10am ET: Surgeon General's Report is released
* Live press conference will be Webcast from www.hhs.gov/live<http://www.hhs.gov/live>. Log in early to ensure that the webcast is working.
* The report and related materials will be available online at http://surgeongeneral.gov
* Additional info will be available at www.cdc.gov/tobacco<http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco>
Example of state-specific talking points:
The California Tobacco Control Program has developed talking points<https://www.tcspartners.org/documents/CTCP_Update2/2012%20US%20SGR%20Release_CA%20Youth%20Rates_Locals.pdf> to assist CTCP grantees in handling media inquiries related to the SGR. The talking points include facts on California youth and adult smoking rates and youth access data, and drives home the key message that more work needs to be done to reduce the toll of tobacco in California.
Examples of youth advocacy events:
Last week, we distributed a request on behalf of the Surgeon General's office for information about youth-oriented events taking place in conjunction with the Surgeon General's Report release, as well as recent and upcoming youth engagement and advocacy events. Thank you to all who responded! Please see attached for a summary of activities that were submitted. Not only do we hope you'll find it inspiring to see how youth are getting involved in tobacco control activities around the country, but we hope these events will spark ideas for activities that can be done in your state or community. For further reading: An in-depth activity guide<http://www.kickbuttsday.org/resources/downloads.php> for organizers of youth events, as well as an extensive listing of activities taking place on March 21st for Kick Butts Day 2012 can be found at www.kickbuttsday.org<http://www.kickbuttsday.org>.
Best regards,
Carissa
