Hello HPCDP Grantees,
The CDC's TIPSII Campaign, a national ad buy to drive calls to the 1-800-QUIT-NOW line, launched the second phase of ads, Talk With Your Doctor (TWYD), Wednesday, May 22nd through a national press event. You can view the webcast of the press event at http://tobaccoeducationcampaign.org/TalkwithYourDoctor.html
Following this press event, during the week of May 27th, the Tips national television ads were tagged with "You can quit. Talk with your doctor for help." This call to action will continue through the remainder of the campaign (mid June). To leverage this national and state-wide effort, HPCDP is encouraging all grantees to complete the following by mid-June.
1) Submit an Op-Ed to local paper: Create your own, or use the attached Op-ed template below to draft and submit a locally relevant op-ed to your local media outlet(s). This is an opportunity to test your internal communication pathways/processes you outlined in your 2013-2014 TPEP Workplan. We highly encourage those who are comfortable to identify local stories that echo the themes presented by the TIPS stories. For example, to make Terrie's story more compelling you may want to include quotes from local doctors treating patients with oral or throat cancer from smoking and/or interview families struggling with family members' diagnosis or disability. Local relevance will increase the likelihood the story will be printed by the local paper or included in your tribal newsletter. For additional tips on writing a successful op-ed piece see below.
2) Post message(s) and graphics to your social media outlets: The CDC has a number of resources for partners to post on their website, through Twitter, or on Facebook. See attachment or go to http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/campaign/tips/resources/social-media-content.html
Additionally, the CDC has a number of other campaign resources and materials that can be used locally to promote this message. The TWYD phase of the campaign is a great opportunity for grantees to connect with local health practitioners to talk about integrating the quit line fax referral into their practice. For more information about the TIPSII Campaign go to http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/campaign/tips/about/campaign-overview.html.
If you are interested in doing more or have questions about what is being asked above, connect with your Liaison for assistance.
Thank you!
Leah

Tips for writing a successful op-ed:
1. Call the newspaper and find out the range of words they accept for consideration. Most are 600-800 words.
2. Read the op-ed pieces published by the paper to get a sense of the style they like.
3. Make sure you have something compelling and different to say
4. Develop on idea and support it with concrete examples, tell a personal story when possible and provide a conclusion regarding what you want to happen.
5. You can pitch your idea to the editor before you send it in.
6. Make the issue real to readers.
