Today the U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory<https://www.hhs.gov/surgeongeneral/reports-and-publications/addiction-and-substance-misuse/advisory-on-marijuana-use-and-developing-brain/index.html> on marijuana use and the developing brain, to emphasize the importance of protecting our most precious resource: our nation's youth.

In 2017 the Oregon Retail Scientific Advisory Committee (RMSAC), also found there is no known safe level of cannabis use during pregnancy or adolescence. The safest choice for pregnant women and adolescents is to not use cannabis. You can read the full RMSAC report on the OHA website here: https://www.oregon.gov/oha/PH/PREVENTIONWELLNESS/MARIJUANA/Pages/Retail-Marijuana-Scientific-Advisory-Committee.aspx

The Oregon Health Authority released a statement this afternoon supporting the Surgeon General's advisory (https://www.oregon.gov/oha/ERD/Pages/OHASupportsSurgeonGeneralAdvisoryMarijuanaDamagingEffectsDevelopingBrain.aspx). In addition to the advisory, OHA's statement may spark local media inquiries. This may also be an opportunity for your organization to generate earned media to elevate your community priorities. Consider how the advisory or statement could support your ongoing conversations.

Attached please find an earned media checklist. While it was originally developed for tobacco prevention, it can serve as a guide for you on this topic. If you have any questions about how earned media could support your work, please contact your liaison.

Below, please find additional resources which could support your earned media responses or local conversations.

Surgeon General Releases Advisory on Marijuana's Damaging Effects on the Developing Brain
Encourages Youth and Pregnant Women Not to Use Marijuana

Today, Surgeon General Vice Adm. Jerome M. Adams, issued an advisory emphasizing the importance of protecting youth and pregnant women from the health risks of marijuana use.

Marijuana, or cannabis, is the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a component of marijuana, binds to receptors in the brain, producing euphoria and a variety of potentially harmful effects, including intoxication and memory and motor impairments. Newer strains of marijuana have also shown to be increasingly more potent, leading to other risks like anxiety, agitation, paranoia and psychosis.
