Finding her story: women at Metro's cemeteries

In 2019 greater Portland's Metro Historic Cemeteries received an Oregon Heritage Grant to Research, acquire, and manage historic records that highlight the contributions of women buried in Metro's historic cemeteries to the suffrage movement, especially women of color. 2021 Western Archives Institute open for applications

To apply to the 2021 Western Archives Institute, complete the online application<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScvwnQTXb02tMzP_aDizihSqIM00N9PDLSHW8SSr0toQD7QaA/viewform>. The application deadline is Monday, March 15, 2021.
A Word or PDF copy of the application is available upon request at WAI at sos.ca.gov<mailto:WAI at sos.ca.gov>. Admission to the program is by application only and enrollment is limited.

About WAI
The Western Archives Institute will be held virtually from July 6 - July 16, 2021. The Western Archives Institute is an intensive, two-week program that provides integrated instruction in basic archival practices to individuals with a variety of backgrounds, including those whose jobs require a fundamental understanding of archival skills, but who have little or no previous archives education; those who have expanding responsibility for archival materials; those who are practicing archivists but have not received formal instruction; and those who demonstrate a commitment to an archival career.

The Institute also features a diverse curriculum that includes history and development of the profession, theory and terminology, records management, appraisal, arrangement, description, manuscripts acquisition, archives and the law, photographs, preservation administration, reference and access, outreach programs, and managing archival programs and institutions.

Principal Faculty Member
Joshua Kitchens has agreed to serve as Principal Faculty Member. Kitchens is the Director of the Clayton State Archival Studies program, where he teaches a variety of courses that cover archival topics including Digital Preservation, Law and Ethics, Appraisal, and various special topics courses. He previously served as an Archivist for Special Collections at the Georgia College Ina Dillard Russell Library. There he was responsible for digital collections, the library's institutional repository known as the Knowledge Box, and the university archives.
He holds a BA in history from Georgia College, an MA in Applied History from George Mason University, and a Masters of Archival Studies from Clayton State University. Joshua is currently working on a Ph.D. in public history at Georgia State University. He is also a certified archivist and serves on the Examination Development Committee for the Academy of Certified Archivists. Currently, he is researching appraisal practices and representation/access of archival collections and public records.

Tuition & Fees

A story of rapid response collecting

A Smithsonian curator's rapid response collecting efforts on the National Mall on Jan 7. "Museum personnel are blessed with opportunities to save a small portion of events across our country, fragments of the present to help future generations understand and interpret one cold Wednesday in our nation's capital. The events of January 6 will be debated for ages hence. The dirtied, scarred signs and artifacts collected the morning after will hopefully serve as physical reminders of the fragility of civility-and democracy."
