2024 Oregon Heritage Vitality Study Update
Since the beginning of the year, the Vitality Study project team has conducted background research, interpreted the heritage vitality study survey responses, interviewed heritage preservation community members, and facilitated workshops with organizations across the state. Recently, the team has been working closely with our Advisory Committee to finalize recommendations and put finishing touches on the report. We anticipate publishing the report in late August/early September.
If you are interested in hearing a few more specifics about the progress of the study including a brief overview of the findings, the project team will be providing the Oregon Heritage Commission with a project update at their next meeting on July 22. The Commission meetings are open to the public in person and virtually.
Meeting Details:
* Date: July 22, 2024
* Time: The agenda item for the Vitality Report presentation is at 1:10 but please be aware meetings can run ahead or behind (see full agenda here<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Documents/2024JulyOHCAgenda.pdf>)
* Location: In person at the Coos Bay City Hall, 500 Central Ave, Coos Bay, or register to attend virtually here<https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_I3gMQEbfS3KXaKMWIwn2eg>.
Thank you all again for your participation in this study and we look forward to sharing the final results in the coming months.
If you have any questions about the study or the Commission meeting, please do not hesitate to contact me at 503-877-8834 or katie.henry at oprd.oregon.gov<mailto:katie.henry at oprd.oregon.gov>.

State Library of Oregon is issuing grants totaling over $820, 000 from the federally funded Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Program
Libraries and institutions across Oregon help their local communities thrive. To support these efforts, the State Library of Oregon is issuing grants totaling over $820,000 from the federally funded Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Program<https://www.oregon.gov/Library/libraries/Pages/LSTA.aspx>, administered on the national level by the Institute of Museum and Library Services' Grants to States Program.
* 17 organizations are receiving funds through the competitive grants program<https://libguides.osl.state.or.us/lstagrants/competitive>. Projects range from makerspaces to huge library software migrations to digital heritage projects to academic tutoring for underserved communities.
* 19 libraries are hiring teen interns<https://libguides.osl.state.or.us/lstagrants/teeninterns>, who will develop and lead a connected learning project <https://clalliance.org/about-connected-learning/> that matches their interests and abilities.
* 9 libraries will enhance connectivity and implement digital inclusion programs and services in their community.
* 6 statewide programs continue to have LSTA support: Libros for Oregon<https://www.librosfororegon.org/>, Oregon Battle of the Books<https://www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org/> (OBOB), Oregon Digital Library Consortium<https://library2go.overdrive.com/> (ODLC), Oregon School Library Information System<https://oslis.org/> (OSLIS), Overdue: Weeding Out Oppression in Libraries<https://www.buzzsprout.com/1948067> podcast, and the Sage Library System<https://sagelib.org/> courier.
These federal funds support Oregonians from all walks of life, in a variety of ways, by strengthening libraries across the state. A complete list of grant recipients can be found on the Grant Awards<https://libguides.osl.state.or.us/lstagrants/awards> page.

Among recent webinars are:
Community Recovery Through Arts and Culture (6/6/24)<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://performingartsreadiness.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7b093c4a1919def871a10e356&id=2ee6049c2e&e=a5d13dc9db__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!jJDA7aHwNrChMlFBHj-45ph6kT9o2T6vo9LtG-gm64cdj0U2n_0oBelndLUDCdfpZqQS_JPFvyK4uvux4lni7ODw6q5TLA$>
Arts and culture, through the artists and organizations that bring them to life in communities, have a vital role to play in recovery from disasters and enable us to move from victimhood to personhood, even if only for a moment, and help us rebuild the social infrastructure of our individual and community lives. This webinar focuses on how artists and arts organizations can engage in this work. It provides a background in basic disaster management principles, shares good practices, gives guiding principles, brief how-tos, and resources for further study. Rebuilding social infrastructure strengthens communities' abilities to move forward after disasters. Learn how to be part of the process and gain a seat at the table in your community's recovery.

Are you prepared? This class reviews elements of strategic communication that are essential before, during and after crisis events. It examines how your organization can best prepare to respond to crisis and restore organizational reputation.

Join us for an introduction to what archival programs do and how they can help your organization. This class is organized into two parts. First, participants will learn what practical actions they can take now with minimal resources and then learn about program components for consideration in the future. By the end of the class, participants will be able to:
- Learn what archives do and what archival work entails
- Understand what materials are considered historical
- Acquire skills in basic preservation and safe storage practices, including electronic materials
- Become aware of what is needed to develop archival programs over time
