2024 Oregon Heritage Fellows Research
Research papers from the 2024 Oregon Heritage Fellows are now available online.<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/pages/awards.aspx#four>
2024 Oregon Heritage Fellows:
* Aaron Hood-Foster, Portland State University: Bridging the Gap: Using Significance Modeling to Identify Data Gaps in Lithic Sites Within the Tualatin River Basin<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Documents/HoodFoster_Aaron_2024_TRB_Significance_Modeling.pdf>
* Victor Ochoa, University of Oregon: Somos de Allá y de Aquí: Tejano Sojourners, Mexican Immigrants, & the Creation of a Familiar Mexican Place in Independence, Oregon, 1950-2000<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Documents/VictorOchoa_Thesis.pdf>
* Lauren Yanase, Portland State University: "Not Fit for Human Habitation": Portland's Wartime Japanese American Detention Camp<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Documents/Yanase_OHF_Research%20Paper.pdf>
The Oregon Heritage Fellowship is provided to encourage thoughtful inquiry of Oregon's heritage by emerging scholars. Many new topics remain to be studied, and fresh perspectives on current topics are needed to keep the exploration of Oregon's history fresh and relevant. The fellowship offers a financial incentive for these research efforts and an opportunity to publicly share what is learned with the heritage community. The hope is that these efforts will stimulate further inquiry and discussion, and even lead to broader distribution through publications and other media.
Oregon Heritage Fellowships are available every other year through a competitive process to Oregon students who are researching a topic related to history, geography, archaeology, cultural heritage, historic preservation, or other related topic. Enrolled undergraduate and graduate students of an Oregon university or college are encouraged to apply. The next round of Fellowship applications will open in the Fall of 2025. Learn more about the Fellowship here<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/pages/awards.aspx#four>.

Early Bird Deadline approaching July 31 for the Oregon Museums Association Conference
Oregon Museums Association Annual Conference: Ebb & Flow
Coos Bay
September 8 - 10, 2024
As those from across the state gather for the Oregon Museums Association 2024 Annual Conference in Coos Bay, the conference theme "Ebb & Flow" acknowledges the nearby coastline while providing a metaphor to reflect on the work of Oregon's museums today.
It can feel like the sands are shifting as museums face challenges and opportunities like changing patterns of visitorship, evolving technologies, revised funding strategies, and peoples' desire for community. The 2024 conference will explore contemporary issues facing museums, so that together we can take the helm to identify solutions and successfully steer our work forward.
Whether you are an emerging professional just getting your feet wet, in the mid-career flow, or an established leader navigating the depths of museum work, we invite you to join us at The Mill Casino Hotel<https://www.themillcasino.com/about-us/> in Coos Bay, September 8-10, 2024.

Salem Honored to receive National Historic Award for Historic Tax Credit project
The City of Salem and the Salem Housing Authority are excited to announce that they have been recognized with the Novogradac 2024 award: Residential Development that best Exemplifies Major Community Impact<https://www.novoco.com/events/awards/2024-residential-development-that-best-exemplifies-major-community-impact> , for their work on the adaptive reuse of Yaquina Hall using historic tax credits. The Salem Housing Authority managed the rehabilitation of Yaquina Hall<https://www.salemhousingor.com/yaquinahall1> (1947), a former Oregon State Hospital Nursing building, which was converted into a 52 apartment supportive housing development and opened in 2023. The Salem Housing Authority continues to work with partner service agencies in the community to offer supportive services living at Yaquina Hall and prioritizes providing housing in these units for people who are disabled, suffering from mental illness, homeless or at risk of homelessness in the Salem community. Financing for the project included $2.8 million in historic tax credits and was a crucial piece for funding the project. The award will be presented to Salem's Community Planning and Development Director, Kristin Retherford as well as Nicole Utz and Jessica Blakely from the City of Salem's Housing Authority at the National 2024 Historic Tax Credit Conference in Kansas City in October.

Lone Fir Memorial Call to Artists
Metro Parks and Nature and the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) invite an artist or artist team to submit qualifications for site-specific artwork(s) that will expand the visitor experience at a new memorial currently being designed at the historic Lone Fir Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
Lone Fir's Block 14 has a rich and multifaceted history that was erased over decades of racial prejudice. Through an extensive research effort, archeologists and historic archives revealed that more than 2,800 Chinese people were buried at the cemetery between the 1860s and 1920s.
One artist or artist team will be selected to create artwork(s) that is meaningful and responsive to the site's history, present-day community needs, and the in-process memorial design. An understanding of Chinese and Chinese American history and cultures will be important.
The budget available for the commission comes from Metro Parks & Nature's Percent for Art Program and is $180,000. Submissions are due by Thursday, August 8, 2024, at 11:59 pm PDT.
An info session will be held to provide further details and answer any questions.
For more information and to apply, please visit this link: https://racc.org/2024/07/16/lone-fir-memorial-call-to-artists/
